• The earthquake of magnitude 7.5 M and depth 212 km that occurred in the Hindu Kush mountain range of north-eastern Afghanistan on 26 October, 9.09 UTC, caused casualties and damage through a large area of Afghanistan and Pakistan. Its impact reached as far as India.
• As of 27 October, it is reported that 82 people were killed in Afghanistan, an estimated 300 were injured and an estimated 4,000 houses were damaged in Badakhshan, as well as in Takhar, Kunduz, Baghlan, Parwan and Nangarhar provinces. Telecommunication and electricity networks were affected. Lack of communication with certain remote areas remains a primary concern. Landslides have occurred in a number of places.
• In Pakistan, the official death toll has risen to 228 people (source: National Disaster Management Authorities). More than 1,600 people were injured and over 2,500 houses were damaged. The province of Khyber Pakhtunkwa and the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA) have been badly affected.
