Lebanon: ‘Recycled house’ renovation brings light to Syrian refugees (TRAILER)
Description: Full Story: https://youtu.be/3pvTziH7-fU Can recycling improve the lives of refugees? Of the more than one million Syrian refugees who live in Lebanon, UNHCR has found that more than two in five live in dwellings that do not meet minimum humanitarian standards. One Beirut NGO has set out to change that, using eco-friendly methods and “upcycling”. They started with the home of Haela and her four children – a one-room apartment which got a radical, and “green”, makeover. CONGO | "When you're displaced, your thoughts can be too"
Description: “When you’re displaced from your home, your thoughts can be displaced too,” says Sifa Clementine. Sifa oversees MSF’s mental health activities in Mweso, a small town in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Today, Sifa and her team are running a theatre production on sexual violence for the local community. The setting is the displacement camp that sits across the road from Mweso’s General Hospital, where Sifa and her team work. The actors in the play are all MSF mental health counsellors. Over the course of the next three hours, the team connects with the 200-strong audience through song, dance and drama. At the end of the play, there’s a valuable moment for the audience to reflect on what they’ve seen, as a form of group discussion. The event is designed to inform the people of the camp that MSF is in the community, and is there to listen. “When we see a problem in the community, we act out these problems and educate in this way. “Often, a person's behaviour is affected by what they have gone through. That is when behaviour changes." Referring to the character of the daughter in the play, Sifa goes on to explain: “In her village, for example, she didn't drink alcohol, but now she does. She steals food in the house and she sells it for drinks. “The sketches show people what can happen, and how they can overcome these problems.” To find out more, visit mweso.msf.org.uk Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) is an international, independent, medical humanitarian organisation that delivers emergency aid to people affected by armed conflict, epidemics, natural disasters and exclusion from healthcare. Surviving abuse in Libya, after flight from FGM
Description: Over 200 million women and girls across the world have been subjected to female genital mutilation, while 20,000 seek asylum from FGM-practicing countries in the EU every year. Aisha*, not her real name, was seven years old when she underwent the procedure in her native Ivory Coast. Her eldest daughter was four when it happened to her. Last year Aisha fled with her youngest daughter to save her from being excised. But in Libya, she was caught in a nine-month-long nightmare, where she experienced repeated abuse and witnessed the killings of people detained with her. UNHCR calls for unrestricted humanitarian access in Libya to prevent risks of sexual and gender-based violence and to offer psycho-social support to survivors. "Hacking" the Peace Process: Challenges and Opportunities in Post-Accord Colombia
Description: Nearly a year ago, Colombia’s government and the FARC guerrilla group signed a historic peace accord ending 52 years of fighting. The FARC has since disarmed, a ceasefire has largely held, and talks have begun with the smaller ELN guerrillas. Implementing the November 2016 accord, though, may be harder than negotiating it was. Progress on many fronts has been halting and frustrating. Three panels on October 16 will discuss aspects of Colombia’s post-accord reality, determining what is running well, what needs to be “hacked,” and what may need a total reboot. Each panel will last one hour and forty-five minutes. There will be a 45-minute lunch address. A simple lunch will be provided. Simultaneous translation will be available.
