Speaking Up | Faten and Ayah discuss partner violence and divorce
Description: When Faten* sought to escape years of abuse and divorce her husband, he refused and left her destitute. Faten called on the help of Ayah al-Wakil, a lawyer at the Palestinian Centre for Human Rights (PCHR). In a conversation with Ayah, Faten looks back at the time Ayah stepped in to ensure she was not left behind. Ayah al-Wakil was one of the four female lawyers who received a one-year training from the PCHR to defend women’s rights at the Shari’a court, supported by the UN Women/UNDP joint programme, Sawasya (meaning “equal” in Arabic). *Name changed to protect the identity of the survivor. Speaking Up is an audio series dedicated to documenting the voices of women worldwide. Our hope is to give women the opportunity to make meaning of their experiences through the stories they share.

Empowering girls - before, during, and after crises
Description: There are 1.1 billion girls in the world, and every one of them deserves equal opportunities for a better future. Every 10 minutes, somewhere in the world, an adolescent girl dies as a result of violence. In humanitarian emergencies, gender-based violence often increases, subjecting girls to sexual and physical violence, child marriage, exploitation and trafficking. Adolescent girls in conflict zones are 90 per cent more likely to be out of school when compared to girls in conflict-free countries. If we invest in girls before, during and after crises, they can rebuild their societies and help build a better future for all of us. More: http://unwomen.org/en/news/in-focus/girl-child
