Inside Syria: Life On One Piece Of Bread A Day
Description: An International Rescue Committee aid worker (his identity obscured for security reasons) takes us inside Areesha, northeast Syria. Here 43,000 people who fled ISIS are crowded into a camp built for half that number. Some 25,000 people in Areesha are living on one piece of bread a day. Others have nothing to eat. The IRC is responding with emergency meals, which we have distributed to 5,000 families. We are also setting up mobile health clinics, and hope to deliver blankets and other urgently needed supplies as winter approaches. The International Rescue Committee helps people whose lives and livelihoods are shattered by conflict and disaster to survive, recover and gain control of their future. Rescue Facts: Why Dems and the GOP agreed on refugees—until now
Description: The U.S. has long shown bipartisan support in offering safe haven to those fleeing violence, tyranny, and persecution—safely resettling over 3 million refugees since the passage of the 1980 Refugee Act. This legacy is core to American values and has enriched our economy. In the wake of Trump's Executive Order 13769, which capped refugee admissions at 50,000 in 2017 and disrupted thousands of lives with a 120-day pause of the resettlement program, the Administration has signaled an intent to set a refugee admissions ceiling far lower—the lowest ever on record. No U.S. president, not even in the wake of 9/11, has so turned their back on refugees. Setting a refugee admissions ceiling of no less than 75,000 refugees in 2018 is both the right thing and the smart thing to do. Travel Ban Strands A Somali Family Promised A New Life In America
Description: Asho fled conflict-ravaged Somalia in 2008 after she was raped and saw her neighbor killed in front of her for trying to protect her. Six years ago Asho and her children, who now live in Kakuma refugee camp in Kenya, learned that they would have a chance to resettle in the United States. After extensive interviews and security vetting they had plane tickets to fly to Denver, Colorado this July -- but just two weeks before they were to leave their trip was cancelled as a result of President Trump’s travel ban. Life is difficult for Asho and her children in Kakuma. Asho has no source of income and relies solely on aid agencies for food. She wants to come to America, so she can work and for her children to get an education for herself and her family. Rescue Facts: Education in Conflict
Description: Research shows that children who experience adversity like loss and displacement can suffer a toxic stress response that damages their brain. This can have long-term impacts on their behavior and their ability to learn. However, research also shows that these effects can be reduced or reversed by access to quality education. Rescue Facts: Uganda Embraces Refugees
Description: Uganda has received its millionth refugee from South Sudan, its neighbor consumed by civil war. Uganda had two options: to try to keep refugees out because of the burden they may represent for a still developing country, or to embrace the refugees from South Sudan as brothers and sisters who needed help and a chance to start a new life somewhere safe. Uganda and its leaders have chosen the second option.
