CARE Cash Transfer Project: Mobile Technology

Description: It has been six seasons since Patricia Nhauro’s family has harvested a viable crop. It has been even longer since her family has eaten three meals a day. “Probably not since before Mugabe was born,” Patricia says with a laugh, referring to Robert Mugabe, the 92-year-old President of Zimbabwe. The IFRC and Zimbabwe Red Cross Society are helping families like Patricia’s to survive the ongoing drought, in part through mobile cash transfers. “Being given cash, it gives me a choice,” says Patricia.

Double stretch: The journey to clearing Zimbabwe’s landmines
Description: Nearly 40 years after the conflict ended, landmines laid along the Zimbabwe’s border with Mozambique continue to pose a threat to the lives and livelihoods of rural communities. Since 2012, the ICRC has been assisting the Zimbabwe Mine Action Centre (ZIMAC) to strengthen its capacity to remove landmines in the Crooks Corner to Sango Border Post minefield in the southeastern Zimbabwe. Sun, salt and sustainability: Improving hygiene in Zimbabwe’s prisons
Description: Helping to ensure that places of detention are clean and hygienic remains a priority for the ICRC who have been working in Zimbabwean prisons since 2009. In 2015, the ICRC introduced a chlorine production pilot project at Marondera Prison together with the Zimbabwe Prisons and Correctional Service (ZPCS) with the goal of replacing the purchase of disinfectants by the ZPCS with a simpler, most cost-effective solution. In this video, we witness the impact of partnership between ZPCS and the ICRC aimed at finding affordable and sustainable solutions to keep places of detention clean.
