Bangladesh: Mud and rain worsen plight for Rohingya refugees
Description: With the almost daily monsoon rains, the displaced Rohingya are facing challenges in the makeshift camps they have established in southeast Bangladesh. Canals have become rivers difficult to cross, and temporary shelters have flooded, putting even greater strain on the hundreds of thousands seeking safety after fleeing violence in Myanmar. Images of flooding and river crossings. An estimated 421,000 Rohingya – a largely stateless Muslim minority in Myanmar – have arrived in Bangladesh since the latest bout of violence broke out on August 25. Myanmar: Market brings community together
Description: A market in Maungdaw supported by UNHCR brings different sects of the community from Rakhine State together. Hindus, Muslims and Rakhine put aside their differences and work together in peace on daily basis. The market helps build bridges between divided communities in Myanmar who have been long divided by violence and persecution.  “It’s very important to work together. If he (the cook) is absent from work, I have difficulty doing the job, if he (the waiter) is absent, I won’t be able to work,” Momo says while serving customers. “So it’s very important to be together always.” www.unhcr.org/uk/news/stories/2017/7/596f75d19/myanmars-ethnic-divisions-forgotten-towns-busy-market.html Information for media: If you would like to use this video to communicate refugee stories or require B-Roll, transcripts, stills or much more information, please contact hqvideo@unhcr.org. --- Keep up to date with our latest videos: https://www.youtube.com/user/unhcr?sub_confirmation=1 -- UNHCR, the UN refugee agency, works to protect and assist those fleeing war and persecution. Bangladesh: UN Refugee Chief, Filippo Grandi, visits Rohingya camp
Description: Encouraged by talks in Bangladesh and Myanmar, UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi today called for more opportunities for Myanmar refugees in Bangladesh alongside action to improve conditions back home to support sustainable return. The High Commissioner wrapped up his visit to Bangladesh on Tuesday after meeting with Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar. Some 350,000 Rohingya have fled Myanmar in search of protection in Bangladesh, including an estimated 74,000 who arrived in late 2016 as a result of a security crackdown in northern Rakhine state. Myanmar: Sewing Project Helps Unite Divided Communities
Description: UN High Commissioner for Refugees Filippo Grandi has appealed to communities in Myanmar’s restive Rakhine state to unite in the face of fear, mistrust and underdevelopment. On his first official visit to South-East Asia, Grandi met with displaced people, local communities and the authorities in Sittwe and Maungdaw townships to better understand their needs and challenges. In Maungdaw, Grandi visited a UNHCR, UN Refugee Agency, supported project to promote peaceful co-existence through vocational training classes. It brings together 20 Muslim and Rakhine women to learn sewing skills and basic literacy, as well as health and hygiene education. Although they would appear to have little in common, many of these women have either had no education or had to drop out of school to support their families. Building disaster-resilient communities in Myanmar’s Rakhine State
Description: Considered one of the most disaster-prone areas in Myanmar/Burma, the coastal state of Rakhine is no stranger to natural disasters ranging from floods, cyclones, landslides to earthquakes. More often than not, these events have a larger impact on those already highly vulnerable and who are least equipped to cope, such as the elderly, women, children, and people with disabilities. With the aim of helping at-risk communities in preparing and responding to disasters, the Myanmar Consortium for Community Resilience (MCCR), a consortium of humanitarian organisations formed with the support of the European Commission, has introduced an inclusive community-based disaster risk reduction (DRR) programme to include the most vulnerable groups in disaster preparedness activities. With knowledge and skills obtained during the programme, they are now able to protect themselves, their families and livelihoods. Video by ACF

Bangladesh: ICRC distributes food to 19,000 displaced Myanmar people
Description: The Bangladesh Red Crescent Society (BDRCS), supported by International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC), has started distributing food assistance to more than 19,000 people. These people from Myanmar's Rakhine state have been residing in host communities in Bangladesh since October 2016. The ten day distribution, in the rural villages, was launched on April 10 in Teknaf area. The food ration should cover the needs of the families for one month. The assistance came following a joint needs assessment done by BDRCS and ICRC that indicated the dire food insecurity among the new arrivals from Myanmar. The BDRCS & ICRC have been responding to most urgent needs of the families from Rakhine since the beginning of the crisis. They provide health services in two major health complexes in Teknaf and Ukhia. There are also attempts to restore family links services.
