Geneva/Panamá, 21 September 2017 — A global Red Cross emergency team is on its way to the Caribbean island of Dominica as reports from the ground indicate widespread damage in the wake of Hurricane Maria.

The 12-person Field Assessment and Coordination Team (FACT) is made up of experts from around the world and will serve as a frontline for Red Cross support to the battered island. Maria made landfall on Dominica on 19 September, knocking out all communication.

St. George’s, Grenada – Friday 22nd, September, 2017: The general public is hereby notified that the National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) has collaborated with the vessel ‘Flying Buzzard’ for the collection of relief supplies for Dominica.

The vessel will be loading today Friday 22nd September, 2017 from 12 noon at the Welcome Bay Area of the St. George’s Port. Persons can donate relief items such as Tarpaulin, water, canned food, toiletries and items for babies. Individuals are welcomed to deliver well labeled personal items.

They have affected several islands in the Caribbean, especially Barbuda, in the twin-island state of Antigua and Barbuda, and the Commonwealth of Dominica, Puerto Rico, Florida and large parts of Houston, in the United States. These disasters have claimed many lives and caused billions of dollars of damage to homes, businesses, and infrastructure.

New York, 22 September - Governments in several Caribbean countries are starting to rebuild infrastructures, houses and communities with UNDP’s on the ground support after Hurricane Irma left catastrophic damage in several countries.

After experiencing a few days of delay due to the passage of Hurricane Maria, the Government of Barbuda kicked off debris removal efforts on 21 September, with technical support from UNDP to build back better, as part of a UN-wide humanitarian-development strategy.

Due to Irma, 5.6 million people are affected, 10 people dead, around 215 000 homes severely affected. 3.1 million people are without access to water, 75 000 hectares of agricultural land and 70% of health facilities in affected territories are damaged, as well as 2 180 schools out of which 500 in Havana. The number of public health institutions affected by the hurricane has risen to 1 026.

In Dominica, the number of fatalities is expected to further rise as large areas of the island remain inaccessible. Until now, 15 deaths and 20 missing people are reported. At least 85% of the population was exposed to moderate or severe damage and needs urgent support in terms of shelter and water. 90% of the buildings have been damaged. There is no electricity, no water and no gasoline and destroyed roads and bridges make it very difficult to access communities. All airports are closed making the shipment of equipment and movement of staff challenging.

Five weeks after the first recorded cases in the outskirts of Maiduguri, the cholera outbreak is affecting four Local Government Areas in Borno State (Northern Nigeria) with 3 346 suspected cases and 53 recorded deaths, mostly in settlements hosting internally displaced people. The ongoing vaccination campaign led by the State Ministry of Health is expected to contribute to limit the spread of the outbreak.

Flash floods caused the death of two people in El Gedaref in eastern Sudan on Wednesday and blocked off the road leading to and from 27 villages.

The Bandigyo-Simsim road has become inaccessible. A resident in Bandigyo told Radio Dabanga that a pregnant woman died on the road, in Sidra area, as she attempted to travel to El Gedaref on a tractor.

A herder died in a flash flood the same day. “The water washed away the part of the Bandigyo-Simsim road at Khor Sidra a few days ago.
