  • As of 14 September 2017, a total of number of civilians seeking safety in six Protection of Civilians (PoC) sites located on UNMISS bases is 212,969 including 114,683 in Bentiu, 24,402 in Malakal, 38,448 in Juba UN House, 1,940 in Bor, 651 in Melut and 169 in UNMISS base and 32,676 in the area adjacent to UNMISS in Wau.

Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced Thursday his forces have begun an offensive to retake control of the town of Hawija, one of the last areas in Iraq held by Islamic State militants.

Hawija is 240 kilometers (150 miles) north of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad, and just west of the oil city of Kirkuk.

Islamic State militants have been in control of Hawija since mid-2014 when the group swept through large areas of northern and western Iraq.

September 20, 2017 (NYALA) - Protests by the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Kalma camp outside Nyala have forced the South Darfur government to move a rally organised to receive President al-Bashir to a site at two kilometres from the crowded camp.

A security official told Sudan Tribune on Wednesday that a local security committee had held a number of meetings, which ended with a decision to shift the rally of the President who is scheduled to visit Kalma camp on Friday.

  • Several incidents in central Rakhine over the past 24 hours indicate a serious deterioration of the security situation. In the late evening of 18 September, an ICRC vessel, which was being loaded with supplies for distribution, was attacked by a large group of protesters. Threats against United Nations and INGO offices are reportedly circulating on social media. All agencies have been advised to remain vigilant.

Since gaining independence in 1962, Uganda has provided asylum to people fleeing war and persecution in neighboring countries, especially South Sudan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Rwanda and Burundi. Uganda's progressive refugee policy grant refugees freedom of movement, the right to seek employment and establish businesses, and to access public services such as education, health care and justice. In refugee-hosting districts, services are integrated with government service delivery systems, whenever feasible.

UNICEF reports that some 170,000 unaccompanied minors arrived in Europe in 2015-2016, often having no identity documents. In order to offer them protection and assistance, it is necessary to determine their age. However, currently there is no assessment process which can determine the exact age of individuals.

The PACE Committee on Migration believes that the development of a child-sensitive, holistic model of age assessment would enable European states to meet the needs of unaccompanied and separated children.

Compilation of available statistical data indicates that the arrivals to Europe through the Mediterranean in the first eight months of 2017 is lower when compared to the same period in 2016. As of 31 August 2017, national authorities in Greece, Italy, Cyprus, Bulgaria and Spain registered 131,167 newly arrived migrants mostly from the Middle East, Africa, South and Central Asia which is in a sharp contrast to 297,255 recorded during the same period in 2016 (56% decrease).

Efforts are under way to pull one young girl from underneath the ruins, where more than 20 children are already confirmed to have died, but local authorities and rescue efforts are overwhelmed due to the sheer scale of the destruction.
