The funds will support activities being carried by the IFRC – the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (Syria) and the ICRC - the International Committee of the Red Cross (Yemen). The two grants total US$800,000.

Vienna, Austria, August 2, 2017. “I like schnitzels, but some food, I don't like,” says 14 year-old Shokria, who is originally from Afghanistan. “I miss some special food from Afghanistan.” Shokria left her home when her father was killed and has been in Vienna for nearly two years. Her story is just one of many perspectives on child refugees examined by the July edition of the OFID Quarterly magazine, which is circulating as of today.

Meeting in its 145th Session, the Governing Board of the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved financing over US$403m to boost socio-economic development in over 35 partner countries. Of the new commitments some US$306.04m went to support 14 public sector loans and seven grants. The bulk of the public sector funding will co-finance transportation, education, energy, poverty reduction, and water supply and sanitation projects. Under OFID’s private sector and trade finance programs, eight projects totalling US$97m were approved.

The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved a US$500,000 grant in humanitarian aid in support of Palestinian communities affected by the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The grant, which will be channelled through the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), will be used for the provision of essential food and medical supplies to address immediate needs and help alleviate the suffering resulting from the deteriorating humanitarian conditions of the population.

On July 9, OFID signed four public sector loan agreements with The Gambia, DR Congo and Bangladesh to help fund projects aimed at helping fight energy poverty, enhance food security and provide health services to underserved communities. The OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) has approved an emergency grant of US$500,000 to help the people of Pakistan face the humanitarian crisis caused by the heavy rainfall and flooding that started on July 21, 2010.

The heavy rainfall that hit the country's northwestern provinces has left over a thousand dead and at least 2.5 million badly affected.

Although OFID's core activities focus on providing concessional financing in support of sustainable projects across the developing world, the institution recognizes that emergency assistance is still instrumental in helping mitigate the suffering of those affected by natural disasters. Therefore, when the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) launched an appeal to the donor community in September to mobilize funds to help victims of ongoing flooding in West and Central Africa, OFID swiftly responded by approving a grant of US$1 million.
