Following the massive bomb explosion in Mogadishu on 14 October, the Federal Government of Somalia, humanitarian organizations, the UN, NGOs, donors, the private sector, member states and civil society organizations are stepping up search and rescue efforts, including providing urgent life-saving assistance through the government-led emergency response center. Assistance provided so far include earthmoving and fire equipment, ambulances, cash, medical and food supplies and tents.

The purpose of this note is to facilitate access for Programme Managers to technical guidance and guidelines on measles. Especially to help ensure that health workers have access to the Somalia Treatment Guidelines which provide guidance on the appropriate management of measles for use at different levels of the health system, including recommended vitamin A dosage and supportive care/management of complications of measles.

  • A total of 97 new cases of AWD where reported in week 33 compared to 163 cases in week 32

  • The new AWD cases were reported from 12 districts in 5 regions of which 64% where reported from Banadir region

  • No new deaths have been reported from all the zones over the past 2 weeks

  • A cumulative total of 60,288 cases and 820 deaths have been reported in 52 districts of 16 regions of South central and Puntland since January 2017

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A total of 163 AWD/cholera cases and no deaths (CFR-0%) were reported from 22 districts in 9 regions during week 32. Of these, 82 cases (50%) were reported from Banadir region.

  • There was a 30% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 234 cases in week 31 to 163 cases in week 32.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 205 and 2 deaths during week 31 to 144 cases and no deaths in week 32.

Highlights
- A total of 234 AWD/cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR-1.0%) were reported from 16 districts in 11 regions during week 31. Of these, 62 cases (26%) were reported from Banadir region.
- There was a 24% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 306 cases in week 30 to 234 cases in week 31.
- The number of cases in South Central decreased from 306 and 2 deaths during week 30 to 205 cases and 2 deaths in week 31.
- In Puntland, AWD/cholera cases decreased from 39 and no deaths during week 30 to 29 cases and no deaths during week 31.

Background

AWD/Cholera is a bacterial disease predominantly transmitted through the fecal-oral route and resulting in an explosive onset of diarrhea which could be fatal in a short period of time. Rapid loss of fluids and electrolytes causes hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure and death in 48 hours.
AWD/Cholera has been endemic in the Somalia with the most common cause of outbreaks being the serogroup 01, Ogawa biotype El Tor.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A total of 306 AWD/cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR-0.7%) were reported from 34 districts in 11 regions during week 30. Of these, 81 cases (26%) were reported from Banadir region.

  • There was a 65% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 864 cases in week 29 to 306 cases in week 30. Deaths decreased from 4 during week 29 to 2 during week 30.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 506 and 4 deaths during week 29 to 306 cases and 2 deaths in week 30.

  • A total of 864 AWD/cholera cases and 4 deaths (CFR-0.5%) were reported during week 29 from 38 districts in 13 regions. Of these, 137 cases (16%) were reported from Lower Jubba region.

  • There was a 19% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 1,068 cases in week 28 to 864 cases in week 29. Deaths increased from 3 during week 28 to 4 during week 29.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 610 and 3 deaths during week 28 to 506 cases and 4 deaths in week 29.

  • A total of 1,068 AWD/cholera cases and 3 deaths (CFR-0.3%) were reported during week 28 from 37 districts in 13 regions. Of these, 286 cases (27%) were reported from in Middle Shabelle region.

  • There was 13.1% increase in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 928 cases in week 27 to 1,068 cases in week 28. Deaths also decreased by 0% from 3 during week 27 to 3 during week 28.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 385 and 3 deaths during week 27 to 610 cases and 3 deaths in week 28.

  • A total of 928 AWD/cholera cases and 3 deaths (CFR-0.3%) were reported during week 27 from 37 districts in 13 regions. Of these, 193 cases (21%) were reported from in Banadir region.

  • There was a 17.2% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 1,121 cases in week 26 to 928 cases in week 27. Deaths also decreased by 19% 0% from 3 during week 26 to 3 during week 27.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 546 and 3 deaths during week 26 to 385 cases and 3 deaths in week 27.

  • A total of 1,121 AWD/cholera cases and 3 deaths (CFR-0.4%) were reported during week 26 from 41 districts in 15 regions. Of these, 272 cases (20%) were reported from in Banadir region.

  • There was a 19% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 1,371 cases in week 25 to 1,121 cases in week 26. Deaths also decreased by 19% from 8 during week 25 to 4 during week 26.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 620 and 5 deaths during week 25 to 546 cases and 3 deaths in week 26.

  • A total of 1371 AWD/cholera cases and 22 deaths (CFR– 1.6%) were reported during week 25 (19th to 25th June 2017) from 28 districts in 16 regions. Of these, 251 cases (18% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region.

  • There was a 30% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 1,979 cases in week 24 to 1371 cases in week 25.

  • News deaths increases from 13 deaths to 22 during the week.

  • A total of 1,979 AWD/cholera cases and 13 deaths (CFR-0.7%) were reported during week 24 from 48 districts in 16 regions. Of these, 337 cases (17%) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region.

  • There was a 19% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 2,429 cases in week 23 to 1,979 cases in week 24. Deaths also decreased by 19% from 16 during week 23 to 13 during week 24.

  • A total of 2,429 AWD/cholera cases and 19 deaths (CFR– 0.8%) were reported during week 23 (5th -11th June 2017) from 48 districts in 16 regions. Of these, 460 cases (19% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajir district in Banadir region.

  • There was a 32% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 3,207 cases in week 22 to 2,429 cases in week 23. Deaths also decreased by 36% from 25 during week 22 to 16 during week 23.

  • A total of 2,679 AWD/cholera cases and 23 deaths (CFR– 0.9%) were reported during week 21 (22th – 28th May 2017) from 45 districts in 15 regions. Of these, 431 cases (22% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajr district in Banadir region.

  • There was a increase in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 2,319 cases and 22 deaths in week 20 to 2,680 cases and 23 deaths in week 21.

  • The number of AWD cases in South Central increased from 1,537 and 12 deaths in week 20 to 2,004 cases and 19 deaths in week 21.

  • A total of 2,319 AWD/cholera cases and 22 deaths (CFR– 0.9%) were reported during week 20 (15th– 21th May 2017) from 41 districts in 14 regions. Of these, 305 cases (13% of the total cases) were reported from Wadajr district in Banadir region.

  • There was a decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 2,472 cases and 10 deaths in week 19 to 2,319 cases and 22 deaths in week 20.

Highlights

  • A total of 2,691 AWD/ cholera cases and 22 deaths (CFR– 0.8%) were reported during week 18 (1st– 7th May 2017) in 44 districts in 15 regions. Of these, 520 cases were reported from Buhodle district, Ayn region, which represents 19% of the total cases.

  • There is a decrease in the number of new AWD/ cholera cases and deaths reported from 3,475 cases/ 43 deaths in week 17 to 2,691 cases/ 22 deaths recorded in week 18.

08 May 2017 description

Highlights

  • A total of 3,475 AWD/ cholera cases and 43 deaths (CFR– 1.2%) were reported during week 17 (24– 30 April 2017) in 50 districts in 13 regions. Of these, cases were reported from Buhodle district, Togdheer region, which represents 26% of the total cases.

  • There is a slight increase in the number of new AWD/ cholera cases and deaths reported – 3475 cases/ 43 deaths were recorded in week 17 compared to 3356 cases/ 60 deaths in week 16.
