Mogadishu, Somalia, 30 November 2017-- The World Health Organization (WHO) in cooperation with the Somali Federal Ministry of Health (FMOH) has concluded in Mogadishu today a five-day national cascade training on management of Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) with medical complications.

This cascade training which marked the participation of 24 health workers from 12 nutritional stabilization centers in Somalia aimed at improving the quality of services in nutrition stabilization centers and reducing the mortality rate resulting from the mismanagement of SAM cases.

Following the massive bomb explosion in Mogadishu on 14 October, the Federal Government of Somalia, humanitarian organizations, the UN, NGOs, donors, the private sector, member states and civil society organizations have stepped up search and rescue efforts, including providing urgent life-saving assistance through the government-led emergency response center. Assistance provided so far include earthmoving and fire equipment, ambulances, cash, medical and food supplies and tents.

Especially to help ensure that health workers have access to the Somalia Treatment Guidelines which provide guidance on the appropriate management of measles for use at different levels of the health system, including recommended vitamin A dosage and supportive care/management of complications of measles.

  • A total of 163 AWD/cholera cases and no deaths (CFR-0%) were reported from 22 districts in 9 regions during week 32. Of these, 82 cases (50%) were reported from Banadir region.

  • There was a 30% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 234 cases in week 31 to 163 cases in week 32.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 205 and 2 deaths during week 31 to 144 cases and no deaths in week 32.

Highlights
- A total of 234 AWD/cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR-1.0%) were reported from 16 districts in 11 regions during week 31. Of these, 62 cases (26%) were reported from Banadir region.
- There was a 24% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 306 cases in week 30 to 234 cases in week 31.
- The number of cases in South Central decreased from 306 and 2 deaths during week 30 to 205 cases and 2 deaths in week 31.
- In Puntland, AWD/cholera cases decreased from 39 and no deaths during week 30 to 29 cases and no deaths during week 31.

Background

AWD/Cholera is a bacterial disease predominantly transmitted through the fecal-oral route and resulting in an explosive onset of diarrhea which could be fatal in a short period of time. Rapid loss of fluids and electrolytes causes hypoglycemia, metabolic acidosis, acute renal failure and death in 48 hours.
AWD/Cholera has been endemic in the Somalia with the most common cause of outbreaks being the serogroup 01, Ogawa biotype El Tor.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A total of 306 AWD/cholera cases and 2 deaths (CFR-0.7%) were reported from 34 districts in 11 regions during week 30. Of these, 81 cases (26%) were reported from Banadir region.

  • There was a 65% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 864 cases in week 29 to 306 cases in week 30. Deaths decreased from 4 during week 29 to 2 during week 30.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 506 and 4 deaths during week 29 to 306 cases and 2 deaths in week 30.

06 Aug 2017 description

HIGHLIGHTS

  • A total of 864 AWD/cholera cases and 4 deaths (CFR-0.5%) were reported during week 29 from 38 districts in 13 regions. Of these, 137 cases (16%) were reported from Lower Jubba region.

  • There was a 19% decrease in the number of new AWD/cholera cases from 1,068 cases in week 28 to 864 cases in week 29. Deaths increased from 3 during week 28 to 4 during week 29.

  • The number of cases in South Central decreased from 610 and 3 deaths during week 28 to 506 cases and 4 deaths in week 29.
