Yaoundé / New York / Geneva: 26 February 2008: In response to the inflow of Chadian refugees into Cameroon's north-eastern town of Kousséri earlier this month, 5,523 persons have already been relocated to a newly equipped camp in the village of Maltam, while an estimated 10,000 more are expected to join them in the coming weeks.

"At one point, we had at least 30,000 refugees in the country, but many have returned to Chad", said Sophie de Caen, United Nations Resident Coordinator for Cameroon.

Situation

1. Les afflux de réfugiés tchadiens au nord du Cameroun continuent en nombre très limité comparé aux jours qui ont immédiatement suivi les combats des 3 et 4 février. Des afflux de réfugiés tchadiens vers le Nigéria, le Niger et la République centrafricaine ont été signalés. Cependant, il est à noter que des mouvements de retour de réfugiés camerounais ont été constatés ces derniers jours.

2. Selon les estimations des Nations Unies plus 37 000 personnes sont actuellement réfugiées au nord-est du Cameroun dans la ville de Kousséri.
