The publication of this report is complemented by other thematic monographs, including education, labor force, fertility, mortality, migration, gender, and youth.

Kabul, 16 April 2017 - The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan, together with WHO and UNICEF, will tomorrow launch a Sub-National Immunization Days (SNID) campaign to vaccinate over 6.8 million children under the age of 5 against polio in high-risk districts in 27 provinces around Afghanistan.

Kabul, 26 March, 2017- The Ministry of Public Health of Afghanistan today launched the first spring round of National Immunization Days (NIDs) for polio eradication in 2017. The campaign which will take place from 27-31 March is the first national campaign in 2017. More than 8.8 million children under the age of five will be vaccinated against polio and more than 7.9 million aged 6 months to 5 years will be given vitamin A tablets. The campaign will cover all provinces, except Bamyam, Daikonda and Ghor provinces due to cold weather.

Over 5.6 million children will be vaccinated against polio in all provinces in the Southern and South-eastern regions, most districts in the Eastern region as well as selected high-risk districts across the country, including Kabul city.

The Government of Japan pledged $12.4 million today to Afghanistan to help eradicate polio and prevent the spread of vaccine-preventable diseases in the country. This is in addition to over $75 million of funding provided since 2010 to support the Polio Eradication Initiative and Expanded Programme on Immunization. His Excellency Mitsuji Suzuka, Ambassador of Japan, and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Representative in Afghanistan, Ms. Adele Khodr, signed the 12 month agreement in the presence of His Excellency, Dr. Ferozuddin Feroz, Minister of Public Health.
