Malaria Consortium supports one last season under the ACCESS-SMC project in Nigeria

For the 25 million children who live across the Sahel, where there is a seasonal surge in malaria incidence, the World Health Organization recommends seasonal malaria chemoprevention (SMC) as an effective tool in the fight against malaria. SMC is an antimalarial drug that prevents children under the age of five years old from getting malaria during the four month rainy season. One treatment per month reduces malaria cases by as much as 75 percent.

This historic financial commitment will contribute to saving eight million lives between 2017 and 2019, as governments, civil society and the private sector aim to accelerate progress against these killer diseases.

SMC is a lifesaving preventive malaria intervention during which teams of national health workers deliver SMC treatment to children under five.

• Severe Acute Malnutrition (SAM) prevalence rate in Aweil center was 5.7 % (3.8 - 8.6 95% C.I.) in May 2014 which exceed WHO’s threshold of 2.0 %. 

• Global Acute Malnutrition (GAM) in Aweil center was 21.1 % (17.1 - 25.9 95% C.I.) There was no significant difference in the prevalence rates between May 2012, 2013 and May 2014(P>0.05).

A universal LLIN campaign to distribute 21 million nets across Uganda reached completion last weekend and was marked at an event in Kampala. The first distribution of its kind in Uganda, the 16 month campaign represents a significant landmark in the country’s efforts towards malaria control, distributing one net for every two people, in households across the country.

London, June 13th: Although it may be relatively unknown to many and is one of the so-called ‘neglected tropical diseases,’ dengue is one of the fastest growing emerging infectious diseases in the world. Over 40 percent of the world’s population is at risk of contracting dengue, and the World Health Organization estimates that there are between 50 and 100 million cases every year – the vast majority in the Asia Pacific region, where 75 percent of cases occur. This is an enormous increase (approximately 30-fold) from the global burden just 50 years ago.

At the joint international tropical medicine meeting, held in Bangkok in December 2013, Malaria Consortium hosted a symposium on resistance and elimination in the region. 'Taking the resistance out of elimination', highlighted current efforts to combat drug resistance in Asia as well as the major barriers faced in combatting resistance in the region, including reaching migrant populations and improving surveillance and information systems.

Malaria Consortium announces a new multi-country programme to improve diagnosis of pneumonia in four countries in Africa and Southeast Asia. The programme aims to reduce child mortality by identifying the most accurate and user-friendly diagnostic tools for the management of pneumonia in Uganda, South Sudan, Ethiopia and Cambodia.

Pneumonia is a leading cause of death in children under five, often as a result of late care-seeking, inappropriate treatment due to a lack of awareness of pneumonia symptoms and misdiagnosing symptoms as malaria.

The interagency field handbook was developed to set out effective malaria control responses in humanitarian emergencies, particularly during the acute phase when reliance on international humanitarian assistance is greatest. This second edition represents a thorough updating and revision of the first edition. The structure remains similar, but includes an additional chapter on humanitarian coordination. All chapters have been revised to reflect changes in best practices, improvements in technologies, availability of new tools, and changes in WHO recommendations.
