On Saturday, April 25th, a magnitude 7.8 earthquake–the worst earthquake to hit Nepal in more than 80 years–struck just outside the country’s heavily populated capital, Kathmandu, impacting areas across the country and its neighboring borders with India, China, Bangladesh and Tibet. The disaster triggered deadly avalanches on Mount Everest and in the Langtang Valley, and caused widespread building collapses, damages to infrastructure, injuries and deaths. Massive aftershocks continued throughout the month, furthering damage and making relief and recovery efforts difficult.

Operation USA has confirmed it will make an emergency cash grant (via partner organization Brother’s Brother Foundation) to Himalayan Healthcare to aid in earthquake recovery. The major grant will fund the local purchase of medical supplies for health facilities damaged in last weekend’s magnitude 7.8 quake.

On Saturday April 25, 2015 a magnitude 7.8 earthquake struck central Nepal. The tremor was followed by several aftershocks registering as high as magnitude 6.7, and additional aftershocks are still expected this week.

The earthquake that struck Nepal on Saturday, April 25, 2015 was the worst to hit Nepal in 80 years. The quake hit Nepal’s heavily populated capital, Kathmandu, and impacted areas of India, Bangladesh, Tibet and China. As of Monday, more than 4,000 deaths have been confirmed, with millions more people injured, displaced and facing total devastation of their homes and communities. The death toll is expected to climb even further, and while early reports emerging from the country have shown massive destruction, the full extent of the damage is not yet known.

LOS ANGELES, CA (October 27, 2012)—Los Angeles-based International relief agency Operation USA announced today that it will provide emergency aid to Cuba and Haiti in the wake of Hurricane Sandy.

While Jamaica, Cuba and the Bahamas took direct hits from the storm, the majority of deaths and most extensive damage was in impoverished Haiti, where it has rained almost non-stop since Tuesday. The storm hit eastern Cuba as a Category 2 hurricane early Thursday. The storm is on course to hit large parts of Eastern United States next week.

PERU UPDATE: In response to the August 15 Peru Earthquake, Operation USA is funding reconstruction and furnishing of 4 schoolrooms in 4 villages combined with a psychosocial (PTSD) program for up to 500 families (2500+ people) and a water project at a place to be determined. A containerload of medical supplies, valued at $109,000, is arriving in Peru this week to VIDA-Peru for general distribution to health clinics and hospitals in Ica and areas just outside Ica.

Operation USA provided disaster relief in the Peru quake of 2001.

On September 24, 2007, Operation USA sent a 40-foot sea container with 7 tons of medical relief supplies to aid partners in Peru who are providing medical care to victims of the devastating August 15 earthquake. In late February, 2005, two Operation USA staff and two board members left for Indonesia and Sri Lanka to visit the Tsunami-affected areas in order to follow-up on aid that had been previously sent; and, to look into local programs for additional projects to sponsor. On February 25, 2005, two months after the Asian Earthquake and Tsunami, we were taken on a tour of the devastated coastline in Banda Aceh by Imam Prosodjo of Nurani Dunia. As we were leaving the area, board member Charles Moed asked Imam what time the tsunami occurred.

Supplies will be flown to Sri Lanka and India on United Airlines and CathayPacific Airlines over the next two weeks.

Having responded with a 747 cargo jet full of emergency relief supplies for victims of the deadly earthquake in Bam, Iran, Operation USA, in partnership with other agencies, is constructing a "health house" (a local term connoting a health center larger than a clinic and smaller than a hospital) and a vocational training project.


The training project aims to replace Bam's traditional reliance on tourism and date farming with new skills, which will allow its survivors to re-enter economic activity.

The official consignee of the cargo was the Noor al-Hussein Foundation in Amman founded by Jordan's Queen Noor. The Jordan Hashemite Charity Organization facilitated customs clearance and provided storage space until it could be transported to Baghdad.
