Berlin 22nd November 2017 – International and local humanitarian agencies engaged in Ukraine joined forces in Berlin for a one-day conference to draw attention to the forgotten humanitarian crisis in the east of the country, urging decision makers to commit to tangible improvements to the situation in eastern Ukraine.

Kyiv 23th October 2017 - European Union together with international humanitarian organizations People in Need, Action Contre La Faim, Médecins du Monde and ACTED in partnership with IMPACT Initiatives will provide additional humanitarian assistance to over 163,000 people on both sides of the contact line in Ukraine. The European Union is providing €4.1 million in support of this initiative.

(Kulto, 14th September 2017) - Today, Angola is still suffering the aftermath of a civil war lasting more than three decades and the heritage of colonialism. People in Need (PiN) decided more than 10 years ago to bring help to the inhabitants of this country. A permanent mission was set up in the province of Bié which was one of the regions most ravaged by war and poverty. In the first years PiN field workers concentrated on the renewal or improvement of the quality of elementary education and the development of agriculture and markets in the rural areas.

In the nearly 9 months following the beginning of military operations to retake the city of Mosul, 933,000 individuals have been displaced. On the 9th of July, the military campaign to retake Mosul was officially declared ended. 224,000 people were able to return home once the neighbourhood they were living in was retaken. Nevertheless, 709,000 Mosul residents remain displaced in the Mosul corridor in Ninewa governorate. Approximately 53% of the displaced live with host communities, while the remaining individuals live across 19 camps and emergency sites.

Introduction

This needs assessment was conducted by People in Need (PIN) and Rebuild Hope for Africa (RHA) in October 2016, in order to identify needs on the Punia-Kasese axe – which is typically considered “inaccessible” due to the extremely poor condition of the road. The assessment was also prepared to clarify feasible intervention modalities, in order to inform project design. This initial findings document precedes the full assessment report, and its purpose is to share key data with OCHA and partners rapidly in order to support humanitarian planning.

It was Burundi in East Africa along with Syria, Afghanistan and South Sudan that were the largest source countries of refugees last year. After the presidential elections in Burundi, instability and politically motivated violence forced thousands of Burundians to flee Burundi to the neighbouring countries including the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) already overwhelmed with many problems on its own. Given the ongoing instability in Burundi, many refugees have remained in the DRC and their future is uncertain.

Background

El Niño is an abnormal weather pattern caused when warm water from the western Pacific Ocean flows eastward. It results from variations in ocean temperatures in the Pacific around the equator and occurs on average every two to seven years. Cambodia is currently experiencing the effects of an El Niño event, which includes significantly less rainfall patterns, warmer weather and delayed or shorter monsoon rains. The 2015-16 El Niño is projected to be the worst on record in recent years, or of a similar scale to that of 1997-98.

Aleppo, Idlib (March 10th, 2016) – On March 15th, the war in Syria enters its sixth year. This conflict has resulted in the largest humanitarian crisis since World War II, impacting enormously on the lives of all Syrian people and particularly those of the children. An entire generation of Syrian children has seen only war in their lives. Most of them have been deprived of a proper education. Since the start of the conflict more than 4,000 schools, one in four in the country, have had to close as a direct result of the violence.

Warring parties continue to violate UN Security Council resolutions and international humanitarian law by deliberately and wantonly attacking civilians and civilian infrastructure, including homes, markets, schools and hospitals leaving a deadly legacy of Unexploded Ordnance.

More than 120 humanitarian organizations and United Nations agencies issued a joint appeal today urging the world to raise their voices and call for an end to the Syria crisis and to the suffering endured by millions of civilians. The appeal also outlines a series of immediate, practical steps that can improve humanitarian access and the delivery of aid to those in need inside Syria.

(Gorkha, April 30th, 2015) – People in Need’s team with local volunteers has started to work in the Gorkha region near by the epicenter of the earthquake. We have assisted the local authorities with aid coordination and data collection. We have also assisted with distribution of first humanitarian aid that arrived into the area. Volunteer medics provided first aid for the wounded. We are purchasing the most required items and arranging the logistics and transportation from Kathmandu to Gorkha.

Prague, Kathmandu (April 25th, 2015) – Czech humanitarian NGO People in Need has started a public appeal SOS NEPAL to provide help for the victims of earthquake in Nepal. Up to 1.000.000 CZK (approx. 36 000 EUR) will be released from the humanitarian fund „Club of Friends of People in Need“ and three members of an emergency team are being dispatched to Nepal to distribute aid among the afflicted people.

Prague, Aleppo, Idlib (March 10th, 2015) – As the conflict in Syria enters its fifth year, the conditions that make it the gravest humanitarian crisis in the world are growing more dire by the day. “More than 12.2 million Syrians are in acute need of humanitarian aid – that is more than the entire population of the Czech Republic. Of this number, more than 4.8 million live in remote regions, where any aid deliveries are difficult or impossible,” says Jitka Skovrankova, People in Need’s program coordinator in Syria. Half of the afflicted people are children.

Ukraine remembers the one year anniversary of the bloody incidents in Kiev. Almost one hundred people lost their lives and almost five hundred people were injured during the three days (18th to 20th February) of clashes between protesters from Euromajdan and riot forces. The riots marked a breaking point for future developments in Ukraine’s situation. Viktor Janukovyč left the country and the focus moved from Kiev to Crimea and later to the East of the country.

Slavyansk, Donetsk (February 5, 2015) – Because of the fierce fighting between separatists and Ukrainian army in Eastern Ukraine, hundreds of people run from the bombed cities only with their basic items every day. Artillery shells fall on residential districts and hospitals, where hundreds of people have died. People in Need helps to evacuate 330 people from Avdiivka and also helps refugees who have escaped from Debaltseve and other towns at the front line. Our teams also help refugees in the separatist territory.

Despite a number of ceasefires announced since September 2014 the conflict continues in Eastern Ukraine, to date driving hundreds of thousands of people out of the eastern regions of Luhansk and Donetsk (known as the Donbas). By mid-December over 610,000 internally displaced persons had been registered from the Eastern regions alone (UN Sitrep n°22, December 26, 2014), to which must be added an unknown number of unregistered IDPs.

Donetsk (11 December 2014) - People in Need began systematically assisting in Donetsk and the surrounding area. We opened our office there previously in early November and since then we have provided food, medicine, toiletries and baby diapers to the most vulnerable people. The humanitarian situation with the harsh winter weather has been rapidly deteriorating. "In the neighborhoods near the Donetsk airport people have lived for months in the old Soviet shelters.
