Participants of two Internews health media projects in Liberia put health in the news in the run up to the elections.

Liberians went to the polls on 10 October 2017 to elect the President and House of Representatives. In the run-up to elections everywhere in the world, party politics, campaign trails and – more often than not - character assassination drive the news agenda. Health stories don’t make the front page. In fact, health stories hardly make the front page, ever. But a group of Liberian journalists have changed that.

It was a story of suspense and expectation. Guinea had been waiting for 42 days, six whole weeks since the last reported case of Ebola had been declared negative.

As the epidemic proceeded, Guineans gradually took in the information available and paid heed to the advice. They learned to bring patients into medical facilities and to respect the instructions given on how to bury victims of Ebola.

Dr. Diawara Facely, responsible for coordinating the fight against Ebola for the Guinean Red Cross, described the impact made by Ebola Chono, the Internews-backed radio show.

Today the World Health Organization announced that Guinea is free of Ebola virus transmission for the first time since the epidemic started there in March 2014.

In January 2015, Internews established the radio program Ebola Chrono in response to the Ebola epidemic in Guinea. The show presented Guineans with reliable information about Ebola and helped dispel rumors.

In February 2015, Internews established Nile FM, a community radio station in Malakal County, Upper Nile state. As part of Internews' Humanitarian Information Service (HIS) that brings information to displaced and vulnerable populations throughout the country, Nile FM responds to the information needs of the internally displaced people (IDPs) in the region.

In August 2014 Internews launched Boda Boda Talk Talk (BBTT) in the Protection of Civilians (PoC) site known as PoC 3 in Juba. PoC 3 is the newest site and is adjacent to the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) UN House base that contains PoC 1 and PoC 2.

The number of cases of Ebola is declining or stabilizing in Liberia according to the World Health Organization. Even though new cases are still being reported, there is a misconception among some Liberians that Liberia is Ebola free and that they no longer need to take preventive measures.

Community Action Against Ebola (CAAEB), a community organization supported financially by Internews, is trying to fight misinformation by educating citizens about the continuing need to take precautions against Ebola.
