Background

Conflict in February in the vicinities of Muhajiria, Sheria and Labado in South Darfur caused new displacements. Populations moved to various areas in North Darfur as well as other parts of South Darfur. The NFI Common Pipeline and NFI & ES Sector partners are working closely with OCHA to establish the whereabouts of displaced populations and to assess needs and respond accordingly.

NORTH SUDAN - DARFUR

Key Developments

The rains are expected to reach their height at the end of August, and aid workers are alarmed at what downpours coupled with the poor sanitation and cramped living conditions will do to people, especially woman and young children, already weakened by their exodus from their farms.

Hepatitis E, which can be particularly dangerous for pregnant women, has killed eight people in recent weeks in Morni camp.

NORTHERN SUDAN - DARFUR
Last week it seemed that some issues were starting to improve, the last 7 days have been discouraging. SLA activities seem to have become more visible and in more areas. Their activities include daytime roadblocks where they sometimes reportedly sign humanitarian cargo waybills and seek informal toll collection. A group of UN and NGO staff from El Fasher were detained by the SLA for two nights and released unharmed. The road between Nyala and El Fasher remains closed to most traffic.
