Dr Jude Gedeon met with the media on Wednesday 11th October to give an update on the pneumonic plague situation in Seychelles. Speaking to several media houses, he addressed the case of pneumonic plague that was confirmed yesterday. He also stressed on current and additional measures being taken by the Ministry of Health to prevent this from spreading.

In an interview today, Tuesday 10th October 2017, Dr Jude Gedeon, Public Health Commissioner confirmed that a 34 year old man has been infected with pneumonic plague. The man who travelled to Madagascar, arrived in Seychelles on Friday 6th October 2017, at which point he was placed under passive surveillance.

Tropical Storm “Felleng”’s proximity to Seychelles on the week of the 27th January brought with it heavy rain causing severe flooding in five districts: Anse Aux Pins, Au Cap and Pointe Larue which were declared “disaster zones” and Cascade and La Digue island which were also significantly affected. Hundreds of households were affected, dozens of families were displaced, infrastructure was damaged beyond repair and many farms were destroyed.

  • Heavy rains brought by the tropical storm Felleng on 27 January 2013 combined with a high tide resulted in severe flooding and caused extensive devasatation to coastline areas and widespread structural damages to infrastructure (roads, bridges, houses) mostly in the eastern areas of Mahe Island

  • On 27 January 2013, the Government declared three districts, Point Larue, Anse Aux Pins and Au Cap as disaster zones

  • Preliminary damage and needs assessment estimates that USD 9.3million is needed for response and recovery activities
