OVERVIEW

This report compares current humanitarian crises based on their level of humanitarian access. Affected populations in more than 40 countries are not getting proper humanitarian assistance due to access constraints. Out of 44 countries included in the report, nearly half of them are currently facing critical humanitarian access constraints, with four countries (Eritrea, Syria, Venezuela, and Yemen) being considered as inaccessible. Moderate humanitarian access constraints are an issue in eight countries, and 15 face low humanitarian access constraints.

DRA: working for increased impact

The new DRA Impact Report provides a summary of our activities during 2017 – including details of joint humanitarian responses in 11 countries.

The Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA) was established in 2015 to improve the effectiveness of the national humanitarian effort. Increased collaboration and a strong commitment to both innovation and the priorities of the UN-endorsed Grand Bargain are at the core of all DRA activities – allowing for humanitarian responses with increased impact.

FOREWORD

In a complex and fast-changing world, we remain focused and resolute in pursuit of our goal – to provide the most appropriate, effective medicine in the harshest of environments. As well as responding to vital needs, our aid is born of a desire to show solidarity with people who are suffering, whether as a result of conflict, neglect or disease.

Groupe URD 2017 Annual Report

As I take up my pen to write this President’s Report, my thoughts turn to Claire Pirotte, co-founder of Groupe URD, asking me to stand as President of Groupe URD in July 2017 so that she could face Death, which would finally get the better of her in early 2018. A socially committed and generous woman, she left behind a Groupe URD that is active in all the major crisis contexts in the world, and puts all its energy into bringing a little creative reflection to them.

Highlights

Most MENA countries have high immunization coverage rates. But immunization coverage has dropped considerably in some (including Iraq, the Syrian Arab Republic and Yemen), due to the conflicts, instability and the prevailing geopolitical situation in the region. Approximately 1.3 million surviving infants in MENA missed their third dose of DTP vaccine in 2016. In many of the region’s countries, problems of equity persist, particularly concerning displaced populations, nomads, ethnic groups and marginalized urban populations.

DOHUK, Iraq – As violence consumed her home in Aleppo, Ghalia’s parents and brother were killed. Ghalia, now 33, fled to Al-Hasakeh, in north-eastern Syria, to live with her uncle’s family. Amid the chaos of war and displacement, she found an unexpected source of hope: She fell in love.

Months into her new life in Al-Hasakeh, she met an Iraqi man who swept her off her feet. They proceeded with a customary marriage, and she soon became pregnant.

Rotary members have changed the lives of thousands of refugees

By Ryan Hyland

The statistics are staggering. More than 28,000 people are uprooted from their homes each day as a result of war, oppression, and poverty. That’s nearly 20 people per minute.

By the end of 2016, an unprecedented 65.6 million people, from West Africa to South Asia, have been forcibly displaced, making it the world’s worst migrant crisis in history.
