The value of mental health in humanitarian settings is still underestimated. When War Trauma broaches the subject with our humanitarian partners we often find mental health comes as an afterthought. Even aft er twenty years, our task remains to convince aid workers and donors of the value of investing in a healthy mind in a healthy body.

As wars dragged on in many parts of the world, huge numbers of people struggled to meet even their most basic needs in 2017. In the absence of political solutions, these people seem destined to endure even more violence in the coming year. If humanitarian organizations cannot rise to the challenge and provide greater relief and protection, even more people could suffer.

In many ways, 2017 was a special year seen through the lenses of mental health and psychosocial support in the IFRC. International attention has never been so strongly focused on psychosocial support at field level, in research and at policy level.

In severe crises, such as the conflicts in Syria and Yemen, the Rakhine crisis and the protracted crisis in Libya, mental health and psychosocial support is repeatedly mentioned as being key elements in the overall response.

NEW YORK, 28 December 2017 – Children in conflict zones around the world have come under attack at a shocking scale throughout the year, UNICEF warned today, with parties to conflicts blatantly disregarding international laws designed to protect the most vulnerable.

“Children are being targeted and exposed to attacks and brutal violence in their homes, schools and playgrounds,” said Manuel Fontaine, UNICEF Director of Emergency Programmes. “As these attacks continue year after year, we cannot become numb. Such brutality cannot be the new normal.”

The Thomson Reuters Foundation asked 10 aid agencies to name their top priorities for 2018

BOGOTA, Dec 27 (Thomson Reuters Foundation) - Violence, displacement and hunger will drive record humanitarian needs in 2018, with nearly 136 million people worldwide in need of aid, according to the United Nations.

The U.N.'s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has appealed for a record $22.5 billion for humanitarian responses across the globe.

Abstracts from the Research Network Annual Meeting 2017

The 2017 Annual Meeting of the Red Cross Red Crescent Research Network on Mental Health and Psychosocial Support brought together 32 people from 16 countries to share their research experience on two themes: mental health of refugees, migrants and asylum seekers and caring for staff and volunteers. The annual meeting was a combination of key note speakers, abstract presenters and workshops. The book of abstracts is available for download here.

Bangladesh

655,000 Rohingya arrived from Myanmar into Cox's Bazar in Bangladesh between 25 August and 17 December. The influx has placed immense strain on basic services in the area. The population density is extremely high and there is a lack of adequate WASH facilities. There is therefore a high risk of the quick spread of disease. Over 1,300 suspected cases of diphtheria have been reported between 8 November and 15 December.
