Event

Hurricane Irene is currently a Category 3 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale. Additional strengthening is forecast in the next day and Irene could become a Category 4. Maximum sustained winds are near 120 mph with higher gusts. Hurricane Irene is expected to continue in the northwestward direction near 12 mph through the night, as it neighbors the eastern coast of the United States.

In the Turks and Caicos Islands, hundreds of people affected by hurricanes in September 2008 now have sanitation facilities thanks to a Red Cross recovery programme.

Between August and November 2008, many islands across the Caribbean were hit by a series of hurricanes, which caused deaths and severe damage to infrastructure. In the Turks and Caicos Islands (TCI), which were battered by hurricanes Hanna and Ike, hundreds of people lost their homes and around 7,000 people were affected.

THE EVENT

Hurricane Ike a Category 4 system with sustained winds of 135 mph (215km/hr) impacted the Turks and Caicos Islands between September 6 and 7, 2008. This occurred one week after the passage of Tropical Storm Hanna which circled the islands twice before heading northward.

The Government of the Turks and Caicos declared a disaster area for Grand Turk and South Caicos Islands due to the extent and magnitude of damage and affected population.

Introduction

Hurricane Ike passed over the Turks and Caicos Islands on the night of the 6-7 September 2008 as a Category 4 hurricane. The Turks and Caicos Islands have six main inhabited islands and are located 550 miles southeast of Miami, Florida, just below the Bahamas chain and just to the east of Cuba and the island of Hispaniola (Dominican Republic and Haiti.)

The most affected Island was Grand Turk, which has 4,000 inhabitants and South Caicos, where no information is available about its 1,000 inhabitants.
