Description of the disaster

In the afternoon of 6 August 2016, torrential rains caused tremendous flash floods in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, severely affecting inhabited areas and agricultural regions in Skopje and Tetovo. The rain’s volume was measured at a quantity of 97 l/m2 , accompanied by strong winds of around 100 km/h.

Description of the disaster

In the afternoon of 5 January 2016, the western and north-eastern parts of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia were hit by a heavy snowstorm. In the evening, the temperatures decreased to 25 Celsius degrees below zero. The mountain passes through Gostivar, Kicevo, Kriva Palanka – Kustendil put a ban on the movement of heavy vehicles, while motor vehicles were moving in difficult conditions due to the icy road conditions.

Summary of the appeal

This Operations Update no. 3 reports on the latest activities carried out by the Red Cross of the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia and reflects adaptations to the budget to ensure efficient distribution of remaining funds for covering the needs of the vulnerable target population. The proposed changes are mainly in the areas of procurement for emergency shelter, food and non-food items, clothing, as well as minor additional community engagement activities. The rest of activities remain the same.

  • Despite the deteriorating weather conditions and increasingly dangerous Mediterranean, October 2016 saw a spike in the number of refugees and migrants arriving on Italian shores. The 27,300 new arrivals, of whom an estimated 4,300 children, represent a three-fold increase compared to the same period last year.

The refugee transit centre Vinojug near Gevgelija, some 6 kilometres north of the border with Greece and the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, looks like a make-shift village. It was opened in the summer of 2015 and has 133 residents now, mostly women and children, stuck between the future they set out to reach and the past they were trying to escape.

The rain volume was measured at the quantity of 97 l/m2 accompanied by strong winds at around 100 km/h, which resulted in tremendous flash floods.

Intense rainfall in Skopje and surrounding areas in the former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia on 6 August 2016 caused flash floods and landslides that have led to at least 21 deaths. About 2000 people were evacuated, and 500 received medical assistance.

The Government is providing accommodation, food and water to those affected. New rainfall is expected towards the end of this week, but clean-up operations to remove floodwater from homes and disinfection activities are already under way.

  • So far this year more than 231,000 people crossed the Mediterranean. While the trend of decreased arrivals through the Eastern Mediterranean continued during the month of June, with only 1,500 new arrivals in Greece, some 22,250 people were rescued in Italian waters during the same period of time.

Highlights

• Since January 2015, more than 1,200,000 people crossed the Mediterranean. From late 2015 and onwards there has been a steady increase in the proportion of children among refugees and migrants not only on the Eastern Mediterranean, but also on the more dangerous and perilous Central Mediterranean migration route. Currently this proportion stands at 35 per cent of all arrivals in 2016. In addition, it is estimated that almost 500 children lost their lives in the Eastern and Central Mediterranean since the beginning of 2016.

Highlights

  • Since the beginning of 2016, almost 184,500 people have crossed the Mediterranean to seek safety and protection in Europe. Of them, 154,914 arrived on Greek shores. Since last March, there has been a significant reduction in the flow of refugee and migrant populations from northern Greece due to the enforcement of more rigid border controls along with adoption of the EU-Turkey agreement.
