MANILA, 17 October 2017 – UNICEF Philippines and the global movement Nutrition International (NI) begin a nationwide three-year initiative to reduce risks of maternal deaths for pregnant women and protect newborn babies from life-threatening diseases.

Working with the Department of Health, the ‘Right Start Initiative’ will provide iron folic acid supplement to pregnant and post-partum mothers, promote optimum infant and young child feeding practices, and provide micronutrient powder for 91,000 pregnant women and 142,000 children 6-23 months old.

From the start of the armed clashes in Marawi City, Lanao del Sur, on 23 May 2017, the ICRC teams have been on the ground to engage with relevant stakeholders, and to protect and assist civilians affected by the fighting.

By the end of September, the ICRC has assisted more than 100,000 displaced people, working alone or with the Philippine Red Cross (PRC). The multidisciplinary response continues to meet evolving humanitarian needs, focusing on the hard-to-reach areas to the east and west of Lake Lanao.

SAGUIARAN, LANAO DEL SUR – When the Marawi conflict erupted on 23 May 2017, Saima Lagie, together with her husband and their two children, only waited until nightfall to flee the city they call home. We find them now as one of the hundreds of thousands of Marawi residents displaced to nearby communities in Lanao del Norte and Lanao del Sur. They live with relatives in a barangay (village) called Bubong in Saguiaran, Lanao del Sur.

It has the maximum sustained winds of up to 120 kph near the thnter and gustiness of up to 145 kph. "LANNIE" has no direct effect to the country.
