Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylum seekers and almost 52,000 Malian refugees in Mbera, a camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In September alone, 471 new arrivals were registered in Mbera.

In Mauritania, UNHCR provides protection and assistance to over 51,000 Malian refugees in the arid south-east region where Mbera refugee camp was established in 2012.

UNHCR protects and assists over 2,000 urban refugees and asylum seekers in the cities of Nouakchott and Nouadhibou, mostly from Central Africa, Syria and Côte d’Ivoire.

Security in northern Mali is still volatile and largescale returns are not expected. Protracted displacement places considerable pressure on the limited local resources.

In 2012, violent clashes in northern Mali have triggered important waves of displacement into Mauritania. Mbera refugee camp was established in the arid south-east region and now hosts over 51,000 Malian refugees.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, refugees continue to flee persistent violence in northern Mali. Last month alone 356 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

Highlights

  • The mid-term results of the Project for Improving Communities’ Resilience and Food Security to Overcome the Adverse Effects of Climate Change (PARSSAC) – funded by WFP’s Climate Adaptation Fund – were presented in February.

  • For the next six months, WFP needs USD 3.9 million to avoid pipeline breaks, and assist the local population and Malian refugees with cash/in-kind assistance, and resilience building activities. Urgent funding of USD 0.9 million is also needed to resume WFP’s school meals programme for the next six months.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Since August, UNHCR observed a new wave of arrivals from northern Mali, which progressively increased to reach a peak between end of September and early October, when more than 300 people arrived in less than two weeks. This represents a fourfold increase compared to the total number of new arrivals over the last 8 months. In total, UNHCR registered 394 people between August and early October. While influxes keep occurring, new arrivals are assisted with emergency food, shelter and basic items.
