Even as communication remains limited to Puerto Rico in Hurricane Maria’s aftermath, the first wave of medical shipments are leaving Direct Relief’s warehouse, bound for the island, where the need for essential medicines is high.

Staff are in contact with the Puerto Rico Department of Health, Emergency Operations Center and the Puerto Rico Primary Care Association, a network of federally qualified health centers.

25 de septiembre, 2017 — Cerca de 5.100 escuelas en México fueron dañadas o destruidas tras los dos terremotos que golpearon al país en menos de dos semanas, poniendo en riesgo la educación de miles de niños, informó el Fondo de la ONU para la Infancia (UNICEF).

Un total de siete millones de menores viven en zonas afectadas por los sismos que dejaron al menos 223 muertos y causaron severos daños a la infraestructura de varias ciudades.

Kabul 23 September 2017 - A new environmental sampling site for wild poliovirus isolation has become operational in Kunduz province, expanding the reach of Afghanistan’s environmental surveillance network to all regions. This is the 20th site established for environmental surveillance since the collection and testing of sewage samples for poliovirus began in Afghanistan in 2013 with WHO support.

In 2017, from the 218 sewage samples collected from all sites, eight have tested positive for wild poliovirus, the latest collected in July from Lashkargah, capital of Helmand province.

Experts from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ethiopia, Kenya, South Sudan and Uganda convened in Entebbe, Uganda, to identify and discuss opportunities to strengthen cross-border interventions for guinea worm disease eradication. Participants mapped a joint action plan for 2018 to strengthen surveillance, communication and coordination for guinea worm disease eradication. They further charted a strategy to strengthen cross-border surveillance among refugees to prevent the disease from spilling over to refugee host-communities.

Highlights

• With the completion of the rapid damage and loss assessment, UNICEF is now focusing efforts on operationalization of the recovery strategy. As part of the recovery, the installation of household hold rain water harvesting systems (RWHS) continued. It is expected to benefit 2,700 households with a complete safe water package. A total of 313 RWHS have been installed (22 in Kamayama, 42 at Jah Kingdom, 24 in Pentagon, 45 in Gbamgbayila, 80 in Kaningo and 100 in Regent).

Ridwan Khatun’s family fled Rakhine state, Myanmar six days ago. His father, mother and four older siblings arrived in Kutapalong settlement, near Cox’s Bazar in Bangladesh, tired and weak.

Six-month-old Ridwan was particularly affected. According to his mother Johra, Ridwan can’t stop coughing, has a fever and is suffering shortness of breath. “For three days we moved with no food. He has been shivering nonstop” she says. “He also cannot urinate.”

Anthropologist Roberto Wright is working in Ethiopia’s Somali region to help MSF reach and be accepted by local communities.

It’s 8am in Galorgube, a small town in Doolo zone in the Somali region of Ethiopia. The sun is already strong. Until late 2016, this area was greener and less populated than it is today. But, after a series of failed rainy seasons, the ground turned orange and became dotted with hundreds of tents. They belong to the nomadic pastoralist people who were forced to settle here after the drought killed the animals on which they depend.

Maria, the 13th named hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane near the Leeward Islands on Monday September 18 th, 2017. Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18 th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Maria then impacted Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis on September 19th, 2017 and the Virgin Islands September 19 – 20, 2017.

• On 20 September, the Inter-Sector Coordination Group (ISCG) reported that 429,000 people are estimated to have entered Bangladesh since 25 August, 2017. The total number of affected people, including the new influx, is now over 1 million. The speed and magnitude of this influx has overwhelmed the capacity of the Government of Bangladesh and humanitarian agencies to respond to immediate needs. As a result, UNICEF activated the Level 3 response for new influx in Bangladesh until 31 March 2018.
