As of 25 May 2018, Sub tropical storm Alberto, with maximum sustained winds of 65 km/hour, has passed over Cuba and brought torrential rainfalls (4 inches of water in 24 hours) causing overflowing of rivers and streams. According to Ministry of Interior, Flood waters swept away a bridge and damaged roads and other infrastructure, leaving many communities cut off and nearly 60,000 people without electricity. More than 51,000 Cubans have been evacuated in the affected area. 11 people reported dead, historical figure in Cuba, and 2 disappeared respectively across the affected territories.

Seven years have passed since the 311 Eastern Japan Earthquake. The Taiwan Red Cross has already completed its visit of reconstruction projects in Fukushima, Miyagi, and Iwate, areas hit hardest by the earthquake. As of this year, 62 public housing projects have been completed in Iwate Prefecture, providing housing for 330 families. However, due to the preparation of the Tokyo Olympics, 372 households are still under construction. A total of 702 households are expected to be completed by 2020.

  • Starting 2 March 2018, an oil spill occurred from Ecopetrol´s Lisama field 158 in the Santander province of Colombia. The leak was reportedly contained one month later. The spill primarily affected La Lizama and Sogamoso river ecosystems. The Sogamoso River is a tributary of the Magdalena River, Colombia’s largest source of water.

  • UN Environment conducted an independent audit of the sites affected by the 2006 waste dumping from the Probo Koala in various parts of Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire.

  • The audit finds that none of the sites where waste from the Probo Koala was dumped show contamination exceeding the limits set by the Government of Côte d’Ivoire for remediation. As a result, none of these sites requires additional intervention to clean up contamination from the 2006 dumping event.

Highlights

  • On 23 March, explosions at a military warehouse in Balakliia caused at least two civilian casualties (one fatality) and damage to civilian infrastructure and residential buildings within 10 km of the site. Detonations are expected to continue for up to a week.

  • The State Emergency Services and volunteers supported evacuation of more than 20,000 people who left the area to other villages in Kharkivska oblast. Some people already started to return.

Through the open-ended corridor that runs down the middle of the building you can see two of the many sites around Abidjan where, exactly ten years ago, truck after truck dumped over 540,000 litres of toxic waste unloaded from a ship at the nearby port.
