Trois séismes entre le 30 octobre et le 1er septembre ont frappé la côte ouest de l'île de Sumatra en Indonésie. Plus de 1 000 personnes décédées, plus de 10 000 habitations et 52 écoles détruites. L'association, implantée dans le pays depuis le tsunami de décembre 2004, a immédiatement mobilisé ses collaborateurs. La ville de Padang* à Sumatra est particulièrement éprouvée.

The association's teams have started distributing equipment in hospitals in the Padang region, heavily hit by the earthquake. Objective: provide support for following-up the injured when they return to their villages. Jérôme Canicave, one of Handicap International's ortho-prosthetic technicians in Indonesia, gives us his first-hand account.

"The people we saw this Wednesday in the Pariaman and Lubuk Basung hospitals have been very seriously affected by the disaster", explained Jérôme Canicave.

De nombreuses personnes ont dû fuir les conflits persistants en Somalie. Les capacités d'accueil des trois camps de réfugiés, créés à Dadaab il y a 17 ans, sont aujourd'hui dépassées.

The North West Frontier Province (NWFP) of Pakistan faces an unprecedented humanitarian crisis as more than 3 millions (1) Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) flee the mountainous districts of Swat, Buner, Shangla and Lower Dir as fight between insurgents and the government forces intensifies. The scale and speed with which people are leaving their homes presents serious challenges to mainstream service organizations trying to respond to the situation.

The fighting in North of Sri Lanka ended this Sunday leaving the area densely populated with displaced persons living in extremely precarious conditions. Handicap International is already in place working with the injured.

After several months of intense fighting, the conflict in the North of Sri Lanka has finally ended with the surrender of the Tamil Tigers, but the humanitarian situation remains extremely worrying.

There are already almost 200,000 people in camps in the Vavuniya area with an additional 60,000 to 70,000 displaced persons expected to arrive in the next 48 hours.

On the afternoon of Monday 12 May 2008, at twenty-eight minutes past two, a devastating earthquake, measuring eight on the Richter scale, hit the Sichuan province in China. It lasted several minutes and destroyed towns and villages over an area of hundreds of kilometres. It left more than 80,000 dead, 400,000 wounded, 50,000 disabled, and 20,000 in need of long-term rehabilitation. It made almost five million people homeless overnight.

It wasn't long before the Chinese government launched a massive relief effort.

Le 12 mai 2008, un des plus violents séismes de l'histoire récente du monde a secoué la province du Sichuan en Chine. Plus de 80.000 personnes ont été tuées, 370.000 blessées et 5 millions ont perdu leur domicile. Parmi les blessés, on estime que 50.000 souffrent de limitations physiques et que 20.000 personnes seront handicapées à vie.

Après le séisme, les blessés ont été accueillis dans les hôpitaux de référence de la province. Six mois plus tard, la plupart d'entre eux sont retournés dans leur village, leur ville d'origine ou dans des camps provisoires.
