Situation Overview

- During the month of December 2007, dry and hot weather condition prevailed; erratic showers were received in parts of Isenya (10.4 mm-5days), Namanga (25.0mm-4days); Upper Ngong (8.3mm-4days) and high potential areas of Loitokitok (80.0 mm-5days).

- Pastoral areas of Magadi, Loitokitok (Lenkism, parts of Mbirikani, and Kimana), Isenya, Ngong, Namanga, Central and Mashuru remained dry and hot.

- Water availability and accessibility remained poor; distance to and from watering points averaged 20-30km.

- Rains in the district have declined to an average of 8.7 mm compared to an average of 12mm recorded the previous month.

Situation Overview

- Moderate rainfall was received in all pastoral and agro pastoral livelihood zones. Seasonal rainfall during the month virtually benefited the entire district.

- The quality and quantity of browse and pasture had improved virtually in the entire district as a result of the rains thus making satellite herds in the Boni forest to move northwards.

- Small, medium and large water pans contained fair quantities of water.

SITUATION OVERVIEW

- In December 2007, the amount of rainfall received across the greater Turkana district was negligible. LODWAR meteorological station recorded a value of 0.5mm, which is lower than the value of 3.5mm recorded in November. This is far much lower than 8.0mm recorded for the same period of referenced (00- 04) year.

- Decline in quality and quantity of pasture has been noted at the lowland wet season grazing areas. The browse conditions have also deteriorated.

- There was no rainfall during the month under review with a mean temperature of over 35.0 C, indicating the onset of the dry season and end of short rain season.

Pastoral and Agro-pastoral livelihood zones (Kirindon, Lolgorian and parts of Kilgoris & Pirrar divisions) -

- Recorded about 4 rainy days on average, similar to that of the previous month, not well spread in time and space. The water situation (for both livestock & people) was worsening. Milk production was low, attributed to the declining water and pasture levels.

- Pasture quantity was low and the livestock body condition was still fair. The trend was downward and similar to that of the previous months.

- The month marks the cessation of the Oct-Dec short rains, which have been gauged as below normal in some parts, mainly the marginal mixed faming livelihood zones. Crop performance ranged between good and poor, despite this being the season most depended upon.

- Forage availability and accessibility was normal in the month remained normal, whereby livestock gazed within the normal grazing grounds. Stability

- The short rain season that set in early in the lowlands and the lower Parts of the plateau in late October and continued to the mid November, continued in some lowland areas particularly Wamba division in the course of the reporting month. Situation Overview

An insignificant shower was received during the month in the District; this resulted in no impact at all on the grazing resources and water sources. A total of 10.5 mm average rainfall was recorded from 1- ALRMP recording station only which reported rainfall.

As a result the quality and quantity of forage worsened and diminished greatly. Water availability for both human and livestock is inadequate. Body condition of livestock is fair mostly for cattle.

- In October 2007, the rainfall received across the district was very low.
