Pledges and contributions

The Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) is pleased to acknowledge the receipt of six new contributions totaling $29,317,432.53 (as of 30 September). The contributions were made by Brazil ($30,000), Italy ($1,290,100), Luxembourg ($5,610,800), Monaco ($35,000), Spain ($20,692,484) and Switzerland ($1,659,048.53). Furthermore, Mexico pledged $50,000 for 2007.

Part I: Operational Requirements and Shortfalls

Overview of the 2007 Programme of Work

As the end of 2007 nears, the number of people the World Food Programme is seeking to support has risen to 83 million. The amount of food assistance required to assist these people is valued at US$3.4 billion. Considering resources mobilized thus far in 2007, the current level of funding falls short by some US$653 million.

Additional resources amounting to approximately US$800 million are required before the end of 2007 to ensure uninterrupted food aid deliveries for ongoing activities.

(PORTLAND, ORE.-Oct. 9, 2007) A senior representative with Medical Teams International returns from North Korea today-the first trip in nearly 10 years by an agency staff member. Bill Essig, vice president of international programs, toured North Korean hospitals and clinics to confirm the arrival of more than $1 million in emergency medicines.

The supplies-antibiotics, malaria and cholera medicines-were sent last month by Medical Teams International and its partners in response to deadly flooding that left hundreds dead and impacted nearly 1 million North Koreans.
