On the eve of the New Year, UNICEF staff visited Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in Alina, Bella, Bart, Sputnik, Catsita and Aki Yurt in Ingushetia. In accordance with information obtained from IDPs residing in the camps, the overall situation is reported as follows:

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), through its Office of Private and Voluntary Cooperation in the Bureau for Democracy, Conflict and Humanitarian Assistance, has awarded a $3 million, four-year grant to Population Services International (PSI) and CARE/Burundi to increase the capacity of local health sector NGOs in Burundi.

Responding to the growing impact on the humanitarian situation in Guinea resulting from the crisis in Cote d’Ivoire, OCHA has coordinated the development of the UNS Guinea Emergency Response Plan. The document outlines a plan of action in case of a massive influx of persons seeking a safe heaven from the crisis.

The Rafidia Hospital in the West Bank is a large public facility which sees needy patients from all sectors of society. It also serves as host for ophthalmic surgical missions carried out several times per year by various charitable groups from around the world. Thanks to this collaborative effort, hundreds of medically indigent children and adults are given sight saving eye operations. This donation of surgical supplies and medicines was hand delivered to the Rafidia Hospital by Direct Relief volunteers.
