The Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs will allocate 30,000 euros as disaster relief in the aftermath of Hurricane Irma. The island nations that were hardest hit and are in need of humanitarian assistance are Antigua and Barbuda, Anguilla, Montserrat, and Saint Kitts and Nevis.

Foreign Minister Sven Mikser says a number of countries have pledged aid for the island nations. “Estonia is also responding to the plea for assistance to meet basic needs such as availability of clean drinking water or provision of medical care.”

The UK has so far pledged £230 million to help the people of Sierra Leone defeat Ebola. This will build 6 treatment centres across the country, provide food and supplies for thousands of quarantined homes and already has provided over 750 operational beds to isolate and treat cases of Ebola.

As well as giving its own money, Britain has asked other countries across the world to join them in supporting Sierra Leone. So far Norway, Denmark, Cuba, Australia, New Zealand, South Korea and Canada have all agreed to provide health staff for Sierra Leone.

The disinfectants will be introduced at Ebola treatment and prevention centres located in Sierra Leone, whose activities are coordinated by the United Kingdom.

17/05/2014 - The European Union is providing coordinated assistance through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism which has been activated upon the request of Serbia and Bosnia & Herzegovina due to the severe flooding in the two countries. In less than a day and a half following the request, a total of 14 EU Member States offered assistance.

Bulgaria, Germany, Slovenia, Austria, the Czech Republic, France, Croatia, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia are deploying rescue boats, high capacity pumps and operational teams to Serbia.

Foreign minister Urmas Paet said that it is a very rapidly spreading virus, which needs to be stopped quickly. “We must prevent a major epidemic, which according to the worst case scenario could begin to massively spread in Guinea and to neighbouring countries,” he added.

Estonia is supporting the effort to alleviate the situation of internally displaced people suffering violence in the Central African Republic with 100 000 Euros.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that the security, as well as humanitarian situation in the Central African Republic is complicated. “The religious violence that has erupted between various religious factions has resulted in hundreds of victims and close to a million internally displaced people,” noted Paet. “We must act decisively and quickly, in order to avoid a large-scale catastrophe,” he added.

Foreign Minister Urmas Paet stated that Afghanistan is a partner of Estonia’s development co-operation, and one of the essential sectors that Estonia is helping to develop there is the health care sector. “Estonia supported UNICEF’s anti-polio campaign in Helmand Province, Afghanistan last year as well, and this year we decided to continue supporting UNICEF’s work,” he said.
