Highlights

  • Significant damage to homes as a result of Hurricane Irma have been reported in areas of Ciego de Ávila Province. In Chambas, 47.4% of homes were damaged; in Bolivia, 38.4%; in Moron, 29.3%; and in Júcaro, more than 50%.

  • People remain in temporarily shelters in Sancti Spíritus, Villa Clara, and Ciego de Ávila Provinces.

  • Insured agricultural entities and producers who suffered losses due to the Hurricane Irma will be compensated by the National Insurance Company.

On September 6th, 2017, Hurricane Irma, a category 5 hurricane with maximum sustained winds of 295 km/hour, became one of the most powerful hurricanes ever recorded in the Atlantic. This highly destructive hurricane approached the eastern coast of Cuba (in Guantánamo) on Thursday, September 7th. Hurricane Irma battered the entire north coast for 4 days. At 8:00 p.m. on Monday, September 11th, the hurricane finally left Cuban territory leaving a huge amount of devastation in its wake.

Meanwhile, overweight affects all age groups in men and women, and constitutes a major health problem in all countries in the region of the Americas.

Two Category 5 hurricanes - Irma and Maria - caused extensive damage and humanitarian consequences across the Caribbean, putting the lives of thousands of children in danger. While countries affected by Irma are gradually entering the early recovery phase, those affected by Maria remain focused on humanitarian support. 100% of children in Dominica require humanitarian assistance. UNICEF scaled its response in line with its L2 emergency response declaration for 21 Sept - 31 Dec 2017.

SYNOPSIS OF HURRICANE MARIA

Maria, the 13th named storm of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane near the Leeward Islands on Monday September 18 th, 2017. Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18 th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Maria then impacted Antigua and Barbuda, Montserrat and St. Kitts and Nevis on September 19th, 2017 and the Virgin Islands September 19 – 20, 2017.

Tras el paso del huracán Irma por Cuba, el Fondo de las Naciones Unidas para la Infancia (UNICEF) está apoyando el restablecimiento del curso escolar a través de la distribución de materiales educativos y de recreación que facilitan el retorno seguro a la escuela y la recuperación psicosocial de los niños y las niñas.

UNICEF está priorizando el apoyo al establecimiento inmediato de espacios de aprendizaje temporales, los cuales, además, cuentan con un apoyo psicosocial para el aprendizaje de 69,786 niñas y de 72,771 niños.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria were the strongest storms ever recorded in the Atlantic Ocean. Pummeling everything in their path, the storms caused massive damage to infrastructure and agricultural land across a dozen Caribbean islands and displaced tens of thousands of people. At the 2017 General Assembly, the Secretary-General expressed his deepest sympathies to all who were affected across the Caribbean, and also the United States. A few weeks on, emergency efforts continue, encompassing food, water, shelter and medicine deliveries.
