· Fiji had declared the dengue outbreak over. The Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported in a decrease in the number of dengue fever cases reported nationally in the last six weeks. TB is also the leading cause of death for people living with HIV, with about one-third of HIV-related deaths occurring as a result of the co-infection.

• Kiribati reports an increase in dengue-like illness cases. Since 21 March 2018, 95 samples have been tested, of these 22 tested NS1 +ve using Dengue duo RDT kit. There have been 3 hospitalised cases, no deaths have been reported. Samples have been sent to reference laboratory for confirmation. Source: Kiribati MHMS

• There are ongoing dengue serotype-2 outbreaks in American Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu. The weekly number of cases (dengue serotype-2) reported has decreased significantly in Tonga and Samoa.

• Dengue serotype-1 outbreak is ongoing in Wallis and Futuna

Outbreak Overview

The situational analysis of the dengue fever outbreak in Samoa as shown in the graph below portrays a continual decrease in the number of cases over the past 10 weeks. The cumulative total as of March 18th is 3,255 with a national attack rate of 16.6 per 1,000 population.

05 Apr 2018 description

Tropical Cyclone Gita made landfall in Tonga on 12 February, causing severe damage to the main island of Tongatapu. The cyclone damaged or destroyed almost 2,000 homes, caused the evacuation of over 4,500 people and left more than 80% of homes in Tonga without power.

Today we announce additional humanitarian assistance to support Tongan communities devastated by Tropical Cyclone Gita.

Gita hit Tonga's main island of Tongatapu and nearby ‘Eua island on the night of 12 February, causing extensive damage to housing and infrastructure. Over 100 homes have been destroyed and over 1,000 more have been damaged. Around 4,500 people are staying in evacuation centres. Power remains down across the capital, Nuku'alofa, and the water supply is also affected.
