  • As of 10 August 2016, 69 countries and territories (Fig. 1, Table 1) have reported evidence of mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission since 2007 (66 of these countries and territories have reported evidence of mosquito-borne Zika virus transmission since 2015):

    • 52 countries and territories with a first reported outbreak from 2015 onwards (Table 1).

    • Four countries are classified as having possible endemic transmission or have reported evidence of local mosquito-borne Zika infections in 2016.

I- Evolution of the pandemic

North America

Regarding WHO qualitative indicators (See Annex 1) for monitoring of the pandemic, the three countries in North America report widespread geographic spread. There was an increasing trend of respiratory disease in Canada and Mexico, while decreasing in the Unites States.

- 8,869 new confirmed cases (146,016 cumulative cases in 35 countries).

- 158 new confirmed deaths (3,292 confirmed deaths in 25 countries).

- 98.9% of the influenza A viruses that were subtyped were pandemic (H1N1) 2009.

- South America experienced low intensity and a decrease or unchanged trend

- North America experienced an increasing trend despite low intensity of acute respiratory disease everywhere except for Mexico
