Regional Summary for Week 06 (5-11 Feb) & Outlook for Week 07 (12-18 Feb)

  1. Week 06 was dominated by hydro-meteorological disasters, including floods and landslides in Malaysia,
    Indonesia and Philippines. All disasters were within the capacity of government agencies of ASEAN member states. Approximately 974,316 people in ASEAN region were affected.

  2. Alert Status for Mount Agung (Bali, Indonesia) reduced to Alert Level III (Watch) from 10 Feb 2018, with mandatory exclusion zone reduced to 4 km radius (BNPB; PVMBG).

Drought, earthquakes, floods, typhoons, volcanoes, and civil unrest, compounded by limited government response capacity in some countries, present significant challenges to vulnerable populations in the East Asia and the Pacific (EAP) region. Between FY 2008 and FY 2017, USAID’s Office of U.S. Foreign Disaster Assistance (USAID/OFDA) and USAID’s Office of Food for Peace (USAID/FFP) provided humanitarian assistance in response to a range of natural and complex emergencies in the region.

As of 26 December 2017, a total of 3,195 suspected dengue cases were reported in 2017. The total number of reported dengue cases, including dengue haemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome was lower than the 3 year-threshold of the same period from 2014-2016 (Figure 1).

Typhoon Damrey (28)

Significant damage in 14 provinces of south-central Viet Nam was reported, after landfall on 4 November 2017. Official tally estimated 104 deaths, 19 missing with around 4 million people affected.
Coastal communities started debris management & early recovery. AHA Centre received request from Vietnam’s government. DELSA stockpiles were mobilised with in- country team assessing the situation.
