The U.S. expanded its aerial campaign against Islamic State (IS) militants in late September with strikes in Syria’s north and east. The operation, which targets both IS and fighters linked to al-Qaeda’s central leadership and the affiliated group Jabhat al-Nusra, risks alienating other rebel groups in Syria and strengthening support for IS.

NEW YORK, USA, 30 December 2010 - For UNICEF and the world's children, the past 12 months have been marked by unprecedented difficulties and extraordinary opportunities. As 2010 draws to a close, it's worth highlighting some of the moments that made this a year like no other.
The year began, tragically and ominously, with the devastating earthquake in Haiti on 12 January.
H1N1 "Swine Flu"
As of 29 August 2009, 5,031 laboratory-confirmed cases x xof Pandemic (H1N1) were reported to WHO by 21 out of 22 Member States of WHO Eastern Mediterranean Region. A total of 524 of these reported cases were locally transmitted, and there have been 21 deaths in: Egypt (1), Iraq (1), Islamic Republic of Iran (1), Kuwait (4), Lebanon (1), Oman (6), Palestine (1), Saudi Arabia (4), Qatar (1) and Yemen (1). Algeria has also reported 33 cases with no deaths.
