A primera vista, Fatima aparentaba tener unos 4 o 5 meses. Pero, en realidad, acababa de cumplir su primer año de vida. Estaba entre los 126.000 niños con desnutrición aguda grave tratados en uno de los 425 centros nutricionales establecidos por el Ministerio de Salud de Chad en 2012 como parte de la expansión de la atención en todo el Sahel. Se llegó a cientos de miles de niños con la atención necesaria para salvar sus vidas. Tristemente, no se pudo llegar a otros muchos.

US$1.4 billion needed now for children in humanitarian crisis says UNICEF

GENEVA, 25 January 2013 – UNICEF appealed today for almost US$1.4 billion to meet the immediate, life-saving needs of children in 45 countries and regions gripped by conflict, natural disasters and other complex emergencies this year. Funds raised by the annual appeal will also go towards improving disaster preparedness, and to strengthening the resilience of communities to withstand and minimize the impact of new shocks.

Programme outcome: In support of Strategy 2020; and the Millennium Development Goal #4: a two-thirds reduction in child mortality between 1990 and 2015, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) liaise with global immunization partners to ensure their continued involvement in measles and polio supplementary immunization activities (SIAs). These activities serve to increase uptake of services during both mass vaccination campaigns and routine immunization services, and to reduce global measles and polio morbidity and mortality. .

In 2011, tens of millions of people will need emergency aid to survive. Conflicts and natural disasters have cut them off from their homes, their livelihoods, and access to essentials like drinking water and health care. They already suffer or are imminently threatened by malnourishment, disease, or violence. Most are poor people who have few if any means to cope with these traumas.

The Food Crisis is Not Over...

World cereal prices have fallen rapidly since mid-2008, although they remain substantially above 2005 levels. Despite this decline, FAO now estimates that the ranks of the chronically malnourished exceed one billion due to income compression due to the global recession. Compounding income short-falls, staple food prices in many LICs have remained higher even as world prices have fallen, and in many cases, are higher than a year ago when world prices were at their peak.
