Geneva, Switzerland - At least 15 Syrian displaced children, 13 under the age of one, have died in the past few weeks due to extreme cold, harsh living conditions, and lack of access to medical care. According to the UN, at least eight of those deaths are of children in the Rukban camp near the Syrian-Jordanian border.

His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, on Sunday ordered an emergency airlift of humanitarian aid to help those affected by the devastating floods in Jordan.

A 747 jumbo jet and a C130 Hercules transport carrier took off from Dubai during the night carrying more than 58 tons of much-needed health, nutrition, and sanitation supplies, as well as temporary shelters. The planes landed in Jordan early morning, and the aid is already on its way to be distributed to people in need.

UNFPA, the United Nations Population Fund, responds to emergencies in some of the world’s poorest countries, delivering lifesaving sexual and reproductive health supplies and services to protect the rights, safety and dignity of women and young people affected by crises. In 2017, UNFPA reached 16 million people in 58 countries with humanitarian assistance, including 10.8 million people reached with sexual and reproductive health services and 3.9 million people reached with gender-based violence (GBV) services. In the last decade, UNFPA’s humanitarian activities have grown exponentially.
