1. Executive Summary

With the state receiving 758.6 mm rainfall between 1st August and 19th August, 164% more than the average of 287.6 mm, Kerala faced unprecedented flooding. Kerala received 42% more rains than usual since the onset of the Monsoon in June. By midAugust, there had been 2346.3 mm of rainfall instead of an average of 1649.55 mm. The highest rainfall was in Idukki district, which received 92% more rains. This was followed by Palakkad, which received 72% more rains.

• A total of 3 (10%) cases were reported from flood affected regions of Lower Jubba region

• No new death was reported in week 38

• A cumulative total of 6,394 cases including 42 deaths have been reported since December 2017

• The new AWD/cholera outbreak started in Beletweyne started in December 2017.

• No new cases have been reported in Southwest state and Hirshabelle for the past 4 weeks

Description of the disaster

Heavy rainfall between 11 to 14 August 2017 caused widespread floods across 31 of the country’s 75 districts that has affected more than 1.7 million people. Immediate humanitarian needs in the form of supporting shelter items, food, safe water and health service were clearly seen as gaps in the affected areas.

12,000 people have been affected by flooding and landslides in Bukalasi and Buwali sub-counties in Bududa district since 11 October. The Bududa landslide disaster followed three days of consistent and heavy rainfall in the areas around Mount Elgon National Park in Bukalasi. 858 people have been displaced (The Tower Post 14/10/2018). 51 deaths have been reported (Howwe 14/10/2018).
Reported humanitarian needs are shelter, food, healthcare and NFIs (ActAlliance 15/10/2019).
