This revised Emergency Appeal seeks a total 1,329,991 million Swiss francs, representing a reduction by 361,215 CHF over the initial budget of 1,693,785 million Swiss francs. This reduction reflects the new operational strategy of the Mauritanian Red Crescent (MRC) following the geographic repositioning and implementation constraints. The revised Emergency Appeal focuses on Livelihoods and Health activities, with no significant change in the response sectors in relation to the initial plan of action.

Mauritania hosts over 2,000 urban refugees and asylumseekers and more than 56,000 Malian refugees in Mbera camp established in 2012 in the arid south-eastern region close to the Malian border.

Despite the conclusion of a peace agreement in 2015, large-scale returns of Malian refugees are not expected due to persistent violence in northern Mali. In July alone, 19 new arrivals were registered in Mbera camp.

Highlights

▪ Based on reports received by end of May 2018, 10,650 children with SAM were admitted for treatment throughout the country (33% of the estimated national caseload at 32,244 SAM cases for 2018). 6,139 SAM cases were admitted in the 21 emergency districts (30% of indirect coverage compared to the estimated annual caseload of 20,455 SAM cases).
A national mass screening campaign identified 2,249 children with SAM (MUAC < 115 mm) in June.

NOUAKCHOTT, 15th July, 2018 (WAM) -- The Sheikha Fatima Global Humanitarian Campaign began its medical diagnostic, treatment and preventive missions in Mauritanian villages, treating hundreds of women and children, under the slogan, 'In the Footsteps of Zayed', which included supervision by volunteer doctors from the UAE and Mauritania.

The campaign aims to promote the culture of volunteering and humanitarian giving among the youth, in light of 2018 Year of Zayed as per the directives of President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

As the situation in northern Mali continues to be unstable, Mauritania struggles to cope with the growing needs of new refugees and the vulnerable host communities.

Summary of adjustments made to the emergency plan of action:

The operational strategy changes as follow:

  • The emergency food assistance activities focus now only in the four communes on the department of Magta Lahjar (Oud Amour, Sangrave, Magta Lahjar and Djonabe bordering Barkeole). Such activities will not be implemented in the department of Barkeole anymore as the CSA (Commissariat a la Sécurité Alimentaire from the Government of Mauritania) and the WFP are already covering this area.

The planned response reflects the current situation and information available at this time of the evolving operation and will be adjusted based on further developments and more detailed assessments.

Préface

Depuis janvier 2012, la situation d’insécurité persistante au nord du Mali continue de provoquer des afflux massifs de réfugiés maliens en Mauritanie.

En réponse à cet afflux, en consultation avec le Ministère de l’Intérieur et de la Décentralisation, le HCR, l’Agence des Nations Unies pour les Réfugiés a établi un camp à Mbera (département de Bassikounou), dans la région semi-aride du Hodh Echargui. À présent, le camp abrite plus de 53 000 réfugiés recevant une protection et une assistance du HCR et de ses partenaires.
