Description of the disaster

A sudden rise of temperature in central and eastern Kazakhstan resulted in the fast melting of snow that caused floods on 8-9 April 2015. In some regions, the temperatures rose as high as plus 26 Celsius degrees. A state of emergency was declared in the regions of Akmola, Karaganda and Pavlodar, situated in the eastern and northern parts of Kazakhstan.

Selbi Turesheva is passionate about raising awareness of people’s right to health in Kazakhstan.

“Every person may face a time in life when they are in need of medical attention,” she says. “Receiving quality medical care is that person’s human right.”

Turesheva and fellow university student Parvina Kurbanoa became the first volunteers to give their time to Aman-saulyk, an organization that conducts national advocacy campaigns to promote patients’ rights to quality medical care.

NEW YORK, USA, 14 February 2011 - UNICEF has begun the fourth round of its ambitious international survey to determine needs of women and children in the developing world, the Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, or MICS.
