Executive Summary

A natural disaster is 30 times more likely to occur in the Pacific Islands than in the U.S. The pressing issues include the region’s vulnerability to disasters and the impacts of climate change. Even small disasters can overwhelm small-island economies like the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM). Many communities in FSM are being displaced due to rising sea levels. The Pacific is also dealing poverty issues, urbanization and population growth.

Highlights

  • The Caroline Voyager is docked in Yap since April 22, 2015 and re-provisioning. It is scheduled to depart for Ulithi, Fais, and Fareulap on April 25, 2015 to continue its delivery of relief items.

  • Vice President Alik Alik is making his official visit to the State of Yap on April 25, 2015 for a week, scheduled to visit the islands of Ulithi and Fais during his stay.

  • USAID conducted an Airlift of Emergency Relief Supplies to Yap and Chuuk on April 22, 2015.

VANUATU

As of 3 Apr, 166,000 people remain affected on 22 islands. 50,000 people received emergency shelter assistance, 20,000 received hygiene kits, and nearly 11,000 children were vaccinated against measles. Despite the provision of assistance across all sectors, needs remain, with an estimated 110,000 people are in need of drinking water. On 2 Apr Government-led teams completed a round of assessments to ascertain humanitarian and early recovery needs across several sectors. A Flash Appeal for nearly US$30 million remains 64 percent unfunded.

Micronesia - IOM staff in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM) are responding to the devastation caused by Super Typhoon Maysak which barrelled across the group of 600 Pacific islands from 28 March to 2 April.

As many as nine people may have died in the storm, which has also destroyed crops and contaminated many water sources. Packing wind speeds exceeding 250 kilometres per hour, Maysak smashed houses, schools, and public buildings, and also sank several fishing and dive boats.

  • Typhoon Maysak made landfall on the Chuuk islands on Sunday 29th March which had caused extensive damages prompting the Governor Johnson Elimo to declare a state of emergency.

  • President Manny Mori consequently declare a state of emergency for Chuuk and avail initial $100,000 to support mobilization of assessment and initial relief efforts.

IOM chartered a Pacific Mission Aviation flight the morning of 2 April for an assessment of Falalop, Ulithi which included IOM’s head of Yap office and representatives from the DCO Office and Yap State Agriculture and Marine Resources Office.

Key findings are:

  • Limited potable water resources due to damages to rainwater harvesting tanks - There is a lightly salinized well that residents will use for washing and cleaning, while rationing their limited rainwater resources

The situation

On Friday, 27 March 2015, a tropical depression was noted forming in the Federated States of Micronesia (FSM), near Pohnpei state and the national capital in Palikir. The storm continued gathering strength and developed into a strong and dangerous typhoon – Typhoon Maysak – which has since been upgraded to a Super Typhoon.

  • Of the 8 lab-confirmed, clinically compatible, and suspect cases, the mean age was 12.2 years; 62.5% were males; and 50% lived on the main island of Weno.

Health officials have confirmed that two different dengue viruses are responsible for the outbreaks in Micronesia.

Marshall Islands has been hardest hit, but there's been a major outbreak in Yap in the Federated States of Micronesia.

Representatives of WHO and the Secretariat of Pacific Communities have visited Northern Pacific islands to assess the extent of dengue fever and decide on the next course of action.
