Update on the Dengue situation in the Western Pacific Region

Northern Hemisphere

Cambodia

As of 31 May 2018, a total of 960 suspected dengue cases have been reported in Cambodia. In weeks 20 and 21, 2018, there were 131 and 135 new suspected dengue cases respectively. The number of reported dengue cases have increased compared to the previous weeks, above the alert threshold level (Figure 1).

Dengue:

· Fiji had declared the dengue outbreak over. The Fiji Ministry of Health and Medical Services reported in a decrease in the number of dengue fever cases reported nationally in the last six weeks. • Kiribati reports an increase in Dengue-Like Illness (DLI) cases. Since 21 March 2018, there have been 387 DLI cases.There have been 4 hospitalised cases, no deaths have been reported. As of 1 May 2018, a total of 514 suspected dengue cases have been reported in Cambodia. In weeks 16 and 17, there were 52 and 54 new suspected dengue cases, respectively. In weeks 16 and 17, the number of reported dengue cases has increased compared to the previous week, above the alert threshold level (Figure 1).

As of 17 April 2018, a total of 408 suspected dengue cases have been reported in Cambodia. In weeks 14 and 15, there were 45 and 48 new suspected dengue cases, respectively. In weeks 14 and 15, the total number of reported dengue cases was below the three year-threshold (2015-2017) for the same period (Figure 1).

Dengue:

• Kiribati reports an increase in dengue-like illness cases. Since 21 March 2018, 95 samples have been tested, of these 22 tested NS1 +ve using Dengue duo RDT kit. There have been 3 hospitalised cases, no deaths have been reported. Samples have been sent to reference laboratory for confirmation. Source: Kiribati MHMS

• There is an ongoing Meningococcal group C disease outbreak in Fiji.

Dengue:

• There are ongoing dengue serotype-2 outbreaks in American Samoa, Fiji, Vanuatu. The weekly number of cases (dengue serotype-2) reported has decreased significantly in Tonga and Samoa.

• Dengue serotype-1 outbreak is ongoing in Wallis and Futuna

As of 3 April 2018, a total of 315 suspected dengue cases have been reported in Cambodia in 2018. In weeks 12 and 13, there were 34 new suspected dengue cases each week. In weeks 12 and 13, the total number of reported dengue cases was below the three year-threshold (2015-2017) for the same period.

• Outbreak of meningococcal disease group C is ongoing in Fiji. As of 29 March 2018 of there have been 38 cases including 4 deaths since 1 January 2018. Majority of the cases are from the Central division and all cases are less than 19 years of age.

• Outbreak is ongoing in Fiji. There has been a cluster identified in a boarding school in the Central Division. The cases are being treated at the tertiary hospital (Colonial War Memorial Hospital), while contacts of the cases have received appropriate antibiotic prophylaxis.
