Sea arrivals continued mainly to Lesvos and Samos, but decreased this month to 2,300 people. The majority came from Syria and Iraq, and 59% were women and children.

The situation remains difficult for asylum-seekers staying under unhygienic conditions in border reception centres. 178 people at high risk are hosted in UNHCR-rented hotels for the winter.

The Government accelerated transfers to the mainland and UNHCR supported some 3,200 asylum-seekers, mainly vulnerable or families authorized to move.

ETHIOPIA

Almost 900,000 people have been displaced since September in Oromia-Somali region due to conflict. There is limited humanitarian response. IDP children are particularly impacted by the crisis: over 84,000 children do not have access to education and up to 14,000 have been separated from their families. 120,000 under-5 children and 20,000 pregnant and lactating women are in need of nutrition assistance.

Bangui/Geneva (ICRC) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) warns that humanitarian conditions in the Central African Republic (CAR) are rapidly deteriorating, with half of the population in need of humanitarian aid.

One in five people from the CAR have been forced from their homes by escalating violence, the highest level of displacement since the crisis erupted in 2013. Currently the north-west and south-east of the country are worst hit.

Dushanbe, Tajikistan, January 16, 2018 – The Government of Tajikistan and the World Bank today signed a US$16.5 million grant agreement for the Zarafshon Irrigation Rehabilitation and Management Improvement Project aimed to rehabilitate and improve irrigation management in Tajikistan. The project, financed by the Trust Fund of the European Union (EU) will allow farmers in the Zarafshon river basin of northern Tajikistan to increase their crops and improve their livelihoods.

  • Ethiopia is host to the second largest refugee population in Africa, sheltering 892,555 registered refugees and asylum seekers as of 31 December 2017.

  • Since January 2017, 109,851 refugees arrived in Ethiopia, mainly from South Sudan (over 75,400), Eritrea (over 25,200) and Somalia (almost 6,700).

  • Ethiopia formally launched the CRRF, paving the way for the implementation of the nine pledges it made at the Leaders’ Summit on Refugees in September 2016 in New York.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS & RECOMMENDATIONS

  • The overall food WASH, health and education situation was found to be very poor and there is a risk of continued conflict and repeated displacement. An encompassing inter-agency WASH, health, education and livelihood (seeds and tools) intervention is highly recommended.

  • Out of the total 5,707 people registered in Gunyoro, a total of 765 people were identified to be vulnerable. In Iholong a total of 115 people out of the 372 people registered were found to be vulnerable.

UN Security Council Resolution 2165/2191/2258/2332

Resolution 2332 [formerly 2258 (2015), 2165 (2014) and 2191 (2014)] authorizes UN agencies and their partners to use routes across conflict lines and the border crossings at Bab al-Salam, Bab al-Hawa, Al Yarubiyah and Al-Ramtha, to deliver humanitarian assistance to the people in need in Syria. The Government of Syria is notified in advance of each shipment and a UN Monitoring Mechanism oversees and confirms the humanitarian nature of consignments. The first UN shipment from Turkey started on 24 July 2014.
