Situation overview:

Military operations to retake Hawiga and east Shirqat from under control of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) began on 21 September. Security forces retook several villages in quick succession, displacing remaining residents. It is not yet clear whether operations will be limited to the east Shirqat area only, or if it will continue into Hawiga district.

When Rehana Begum, 20, fled Myanmar for Bangladesh she was heavily pregnant with twins, struggling for three days across mountains and spending two further days sleeping on the side of the road once she crossed the border.

On the day she arrived at Unchiprang camp, an informal settlement for new arrivals, she gave birth to a boy and a girl. The baby boy died during childbirth, and her husband Sulaiman had to bury him in an unmarked grave in the mud next to their tent.

DFID field teams arrived on the island yesterday (20 September) to carry out a three day assessment of the impact of the Category 5 hurricane.

Initial reports suggest widespread destruction, with 90% of buildings damaged or destroyed.

Oxfam is sending humanitarian experts to Morelos and Puebla, two of the areas worst affected by Tuesday's 7.1 earthquake that struck central Mexico.

Over 200 people have died and hundreds are injured. Many remain trapped under the rubble.

Oxfam’s response is likely to focus on providing food, water and sanitation, and making sure people are safe.

SYNOPSIS OF HURRICANE MARIA

Maria, the 13th named hurricane of the 2017 Atlantic Hurricane Season, became a category 5 hurricane near the Leeward Islands on Monday September 18th, 2017. Hurricane Maria impacted Dominica at approximately 9:35pm on September 18th as an extremely strong hurricane with wind speeds of 155 mph. Maria then impacted St. Kitts and Nevis and Antigua and Barbuda on September 19th, 2017 and the Virgin Islands September 19 – 20, 2017.

Kutupalong, Bangladesh – A massive scale-up of humanitarian aid in Bangladesh is needed to avoid a huge public health disaster following the arrival of hundreds of thousands of Rohingya refugees. Following a wave of targeted violence against Rohingya more than 422,000 people have fled to Bangladesh from Rakhine State in Myanmar within a three week period. The most recent influx of Rohingya refugees has added to the hundreds of thousands of Rohingya who fled across the border during episodes of violence in previous years.

Hurricanes Irma and Maria have brought widespread destruction to the Caribbean. Trevor Queeley, from the Anguilla Red Cross, says Maria is delaying the aid effort, but his teams are eager to get back to helping people.

Hurricane Maria is battering our shores, less than two weeks after Hurricane Irma brought devastation to Anguilla. As I write this, people are sheltering from powerful winds and tropical storm conditions.

Bangladesh - As a result of the close cooperation between the King Salman Center for Relief and Humanitarian Works (KSRelief) and IOM, the UN Migration Agency, to urgently respond to the needs of Rohingya in Bangladesh, the King Salman Centre has provided aid in the form of 100 tons of food, shelter and core relief items (tents, sleeping mats, blankets and food baskets). IOM has chartered a Boeing 747 to transport the aid to Bangladesh. The plane will arrive in Chittagong, Bangladesh, at 2 am on Friday (22/09).

21 September 2017, Rome-- Robust harvests in Latin America and rebounding agricultural conditions in Southern Africa are on course to improve the global food supply situation, but ongoing civil conflicts and climate-related shocks are affecting progress towards hunger reduction, according to the new edition of FAO's Crop Prospects and Food Situation report.

Calculated each year by the International Food Policy Research Institute (IFPRI), the GHI highlights successes and failures in hunger reduction and provides insights into the drivers of hunger.
