Rome / New York, 19 September 2017 – African farmers from a remote village in northern Zambia have teamed up with the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) to send a giant message to world leaders gathering in New York this week – invest more in agriculture if you want to end poverty and hunger by 2030.
Following the 7 September earthquake, 41 municipalities of the State of Oaxaca report damages, with over 20 939 houses, 241 schools and 16 hospitals presented as severely damaged. The population of concern is composed of 49 875 people. In Chiapas, 81 municipalities are affected, with 18 826 houses and 48 hospitals severely damaged. The total number of people in shelters is 6 057 (mostly in Oaxaca).
The African Union/United Nations Hybrid Mission in Darfur (UNAMID) focuses on the protection of civilians—especially vulnerable groups such as internally displaced persons who remain unable to return to their traditional homes due to conflict. The Mission and its UN Volunteers respond to the changing peacekeeping environment by placing increased focus on stabilization activities that preserve gains achieved. This is a complex mandate that adapts to evolving circumstances in hope of making a sustainable transition towards peace in Darfur.
Following violent attacks and intimidation, more than 3 200 people have left several villages in the commune of Nassoumbou (province of Soum). They have sought refuge in Djibo, capital of the province, and even further south. Food and non-food items have been distributed by the ICRC to 6 000 people, including IDPs and host families.
Some 16 000 people have been affected by floods. The government entity for emergency response has provided relief assistance to the affected populations.
Hurricane MARIA-17 continued moving west-northwest, strengthening. It made landfall over Dominica island on 19 September at 1.15 UTC with maximum sustained winds of 260 km/h (category 5 hurricane).

Uganda received its one millionth refugee from South Sudan on 17 August. This influx of people, many of whom have fled terrible violence to seek sanctuary in northern Uganda, has put a significant financial strain on the country and in particular its northern region.

Following the passage of tropical cyclone DOKSURI in Vietnam, media reported that nine people were killed, four people went missing, 112 people were injured and more than 150 000 houses were damaged. The most affected provinces are Ha Tinh and Quang Binh (North Central Coast Region). National authorities reported that in the district of Ky Anh, 80 percent of houses, schools and health stations have been damaged.
In Thailand, DOKSURI affected eight provinces. Hundreds of house have been damaged by the floods and assessments are still ongoing.

As new cases of cholera emerge from Monguno, Dikwa and other parts of Maiduguri, the capital of Borno state, Nigeria, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) continues to scale up its response. The Borno state Ministry of Health has reported 2,627 cholera cases, with 48 deaths, since the start of the outbreak. Maiduguri alone has witnessed 1,425 cases, while 600 and 602 cases have so far been reported in Dikwa and Monguno respectively.

El huracán María barrió la pequeña isla de Dominica con vientos de fuerza catastrófica durante la noche del lunes, bajó brevemente a categoría 4 pero se volvió a fortalecer en la madrugada del martes, emprendiendo una ruta sobre el Caribe oriental que lo podría llevar directamente sobre Puerto Rico.
El poderoso huracán, con vientos de hasta 257 km por hora, tocó tierra en Dominica hacia la 01h15 GMT del martes, informó el Centro Nacional de Huracanes de EEUU, citando datos del radar de Martinica y de aviones cazadores de huracanes de la Fuerza Aérea de EEUU.
