FAO and UNHCR launch new tool to save forests in displacement-affected areas
Reliance on woodfuel main driver of forest degradation and deforestation in displacement settings
20 June 2018, Rome/Geneva - The United Nations' Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and Refugee Agency (UNHCR) launched today a new handbook to help restore forests in displacement-affected areas, where heavy reliance on woodfuel puts forests and woodlands in jeopardy.
Migrants and refugees fleeing danger in Central America are trapped and exposed to more violence in Mexico due to ever tighter and more callous United States border control policies, said Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) on World Refugee Day.

Today on World Refugee Day (June 20), mayors from more than 50 cities around the world, including Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Los Angeles, Manchester, Mexico City, New York, São Paulo and Sydney, are calling for more local authorities and municipalities to join them in welcoming and including refugees in their communities.

Les ratissages en cours occasionnent des restrictions de mouvements, notamment dans les localités de Toumour, Bosso et Gueskerou. Si ces restrictions ont été levées à la fin du mois, l’Etat d’urgence a été reconduit et le couvre-feu est toujours en vigueur.

GENEVA (19 June 2018) – The world must act now to help those forced to leave their homes by overwhelming circumstances says a UN rights expert. In a statement to mark World Refugee Day, the UN Special Rapporteur on minority issues, Fernand de Varennes, is urging people to support action to help refugees, including education, shelter and training for work:
“Every minute, 20 people from different geographical, racial, linguistic and religious backgrounds are forced to leave their homes by hatred or conflict. Most of them come from minorities and are vulnerable and marginalised.
GENEVA, 20 June 2018 – Following the end of the longest running siege in modern history, lasting more than five years, the UN Commission of Inquiry has condemned this method of warfare in Syria as barbaric and medieval, reporting that civilians in eastern Ghouta experienced immense physical and psychological harm while enduring near daily bombardments and extreme deprivations – in some cases leading to preventable deaths.

Human rights situations that require the Council’s attention
The Wau PoC area adjacent to UNMISS was established in June 2016, following violence in Site location and around Wau town, making it the most recently established PoC in South Sudan. In April 2017, an outbreak of violence resulted in a major influx, at which point IOM conducted an exercise to biometric register IDPs for food assistance, which recorded the population at 39,156. As of May 2018, the population now stands at 20,373.
The Wau collective sites were established in June 2016 following violent clashes in and around Wau town. Currently there are four Collective Centers, Cathedral, Nazareth, Lokoloko and St. Joseph. Since then the protection centres have been protecting thousands of people. A fifth collective site, ECS was established in February 2017 hosting IDPs mainly from Jur River following clashes in the area. In April 2017, all IDPs were evicted from ECS and the site closed, with some IDPs being moved to Masna, 7km south of Wau town.

Due to the upcoming elections, 5 health facilities are used as polling centres, which will negatively affect the provision of services.
In May, 10 attacks on health care were reported. These included closure of 6 health facilities, 3 incidents of looting of equipment and supplies, one health worker killed and one more detained by AGEs.
Health Cluster partners are responding to a drought that affects the northern region. Up to 2.2 million people may be affected by food insecurity.
