Se han logrado avances significativos y sustanciales en muchos de los objetivos, incluyendo el de reducir a la mitad la cantidad de personas que viven en condiciones de pobreza extrema y el porcentaje de personas sin acceso sostenible a fuentes mejoradas de agua potable.

SUMMARY

Famine conditions were still present in parts of southern Somalia when the previous humanitarian appeal for Somalia was launched in December 2011. On 3 February, the famine was declared over, largely due to the delivery of aid under extremely difficult conditions and the exceptional harvest at the start of 2012.

OCHA adds 500 free humanitarian symbols to communications tools and services

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian affairs (OCHA) has created a set of 500 freely available humanitarian icons to help relief workers present emergency and crisis-related information quickly and simply.

The review of the situation of girls and boys in Ethiopia is produced by the Government of Ethiopia and the United Nations.It is the first such publication since 1993. Preparation started in 2010 with working papers based on literature reviews and field work in all regions. Findings were discussed in a series of meetings with civil servants and civil society. This information was used to help frame how the United Nations would support the Growth and Transformation Plan. To the extent possible the data has been updated as of the end of 2011.

  1. THE DISASTER

1.1 Introduction

Thailand is no stranger to natural disasters. The country has a long history of drought and flood cycles in seasonal variance. Flooding occurs every year in the Chao Phraya River Basin. Tropical storm cycles come from the east through Laos and Vietnam and touchdown in the northern parts of the country where water collects and flows downstream into the basin. With a changing climate and increasing variance and severity of weather, events similar to this flood may no longer be only 50 years in frequency.

(IFRC) Strategy 2020 recognizes that the underlying causes of vulnerability include rapidly changing global demographics, increasing impact of climate change, unplanned urbanization, high levels of violence in society, involuntary migration pressures, new and emerging diseases, environmental degradation and insecurity of access to water, food and natural resources. The linkages and interactions between these trends are likely to result in different patterns of vulnerability in the future.
