The Uganda humanitarian profile 2012 is the second version after a decision was made to end the Consolidated Appeals Process (CAP) in Uganda. It builds on the humanitarian profile for 2011 to provide an update on the humanitarian issues in the country. This is both a preparedness and resource mobilization tool which is updated every year to inform government and the humanitarian community on key humanitarian issues in the country.

Tropical storm Ondoy (international name Ketsana) hit the Philippines on September 26, 2009, causing widespread flooding Tropical storm Ondoy was quickly followed by typhoon Pepeng (international name Parma). It initially brought powerful winds with gusts of up to 230 km/hr then an extended period of heavy rains, with cumulative rainfall amounts exceeding 1,000 mm in some areas. The resulting river floods have been estimated to have a return period of around 50 years, meaning that statistically speaking, such a rainfall event occurs on average once in every 50 years.

The Afghanistan Human Development Report 2011 is appearing at a critical moment. The world’s attention is focused on this impoverished landlocked country on the threshold of the 10-year countdown to the 2020 target of the Millennium Development Goals. There are worrying signs that scarcity is looming. During the past nine years, Afghanistan has achieved gains in health, education and the standard of living. Yet, the number and magnitude of the remaining difficulties are significant. Access to safe water is one of the chief challenges.
