The United Nations in Malawi on 24th October 2018 presented the stories of ordinary Malawians with extraordinary courage, talent and drive to make a difference in their communities and show the way to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Malawi. This was part of United Nations Day celebrations in Lilongwe.

UN and Malawi Government sign the new UNDAF 2019-2023

On 19 September 2018, the United Nations and the Government of Malawi signed the new United Nations Development Assistance Framework (UNDAF) which will run from 2019 to 2023. The new UNDAF will succeed the UNDAF which ran from 2012 to 2016 with an extension until 2018.

UN Resident Coordinator Maria Jose Torres described the UNDAF as a strategic, medium term results framework that provides a collective vision and response of the UN System to national development priorities and results.

Failure to take action now means that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) will not be met, undermining the credibility of the international community and leaving millions to die unnecessarily.

The majority of the Arab States possess all the requisite elements to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals. There’s a young, educated workforce, plenty of natural resources, a notable increase in investments in renewable energy, and a much-needed uptick in efforts to support equality. Climate change, conflict and other related factors threaten to derail this progress, and ruin any chances of a Pax Arabica.

Executive Summary

Indonesia is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire and faces many natural threats including earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, flooding, and droughts. The country has experienced an average of 290 significant natural disasters annually over the last 30 years.3 This includes the 2004 Indian Ocean Tsunami which killed approximately 220,000 people across four countries, 167,000 in Indonesia alone, and cost an estimated $10 billion in damages.4

In October 2017, Governor of the US Virgin Islands Kenneth Mapp called for the Hurricane Recovery and Resiliency Task Force to develop a comprehensive report on the 2017 hurricanes’ impact, as well as produce recommendations for effective recovery and resilience. Specifically, the report was to answer three questions for each of several sectors:

  1. What happened during the hurricanes and why?

  2. How will climate change affect the sector in the future?

  3. What will the Territory do?

Both are about significant changes aimed at a new course for development, one that supports people and the planet, and that meets the challenges and opportunities of our complex, rapidly changing world.

A 12 ans de l’échéance des ODD, la Vice-Secrétaire générale de l’ONU Amina J. Mohammed et le Président de l’Assemblée générale des Nations Unies Miroslav Lajčák ont souligné que les efforts déployés sont au ralenti et que de nombreux défis persistaient.
